To avoid the Student Win 7 hassle (upgrading Vista 32 to Win 7 Pro 64 bit ISO burn, etc), can I simply use the Home Prem 32 Upgrade (for my other computer) arriving this afternoon with my 64bit Pro upgrade key & end up with the 64bit Pro installation?

Thanks.

No... you can only update to the same version that you have installed... Home to Home... etc.

Hmmn. Not sure it I expressed my question fully as this makes life tougher & I may have wasted $30.

I guess what I was really asking was if the disks included in a boxed version of Win 7 32bit Home Premium upgrade could be used to install Win 7 64bit Pro as I have a valid Win 7 64bit Pro upgrade key. (edit: I know a "clean install" from the upgrade would be needed.)

I guess I need to clear up the version upgrade issue: All the "guides" seem to suggest that an existing Vista Home Prem could be upgraded to Windows 7 Pro if I purchased the Pro upgrade. However - you are stating that is incorrect and an upgrade license must be for the equivilent level (Vista Home Prem to Win 7 Home Prem) and not a higher level. So then to install Win7 Pro, that would imply that I must have an activvated Pro version of Vista/XP installed or have an already activated lesser version of Win 7. Correct?

This is a trick question!! The premium upgrade you want to use is pre-designated as premium. So I will say you will not be able to install a Professional version, even with a Pro key, from a Premium install DVD.

A single key will probably be usable for either a 32 or 64 bit install of the same version. If you are a student, they seem to be selling those by a single DVD with a separate key for each.

Sounds like we might be talking apples and oranges, which has been a rather large problem during the release of this OS. Because there has not yet been much feedback from folks that have actually done installs, there are still many uncertain possibilities.

That is what I read yesterday on the Microsoft website.

Ended up burning the Digital River supplied Win 7 Pro 64bit download to an ISO disk.
Selected "custom install" - decided to format the Vista partition (c:\ )
Win 7 Pro 64 then installed on that clean partition using the Win 7 Pro 64bit key.

So - a purchased Win 7 Pro 64bit upgrade will work over a Vista Home Premium install. Chickened out using the 64bit disk in the upgrade box.

Understand. Semantics are important, however, for the vast majority, all they care about is whether they can "upgrade" from Vista X to Win 7 version X, Y, or Z using a Win 7 X, Y, Z upgrade program.

After that is known, then one can delve into whether a simple inplace upgrade is appropriate or if a clean install (formating the partition/drive while following the custom install procedures) is needed. Time for an adult beverage.

I have used windows 7 Retail Upgraded DVD with the student keys (x86 and x64) without issue. Just install using the retail upgrade DVD then when it asks you just plop in your student key and activate. Now the Upgrade DVD comes with both x86 and x64 versions, I don't know if you can use the x86 student key on a x64 install. There is only one way to find out.

And just so you know I boot from the upgrade DVD formatted the hard drive and installed a fresh copy NO PROBLEM.
