ok, did a number of searches and no one seems to be having the issue I am...
I start dvd, click install, it copies files to the hard drive.. 5 min or more later I can start the process(check online for update, etc..) Once it gets to checking compatibility... it drops to a crawl... access the HDD maybe one click every 10-15 seconds.. it has been almost 2 hours just one checking compatibility...
I tried this process yesterday as well, took about 5 hours to get to gather files, settings and programs, which ran for 14 hours before I stopped it (IT was on 50%)
I've tried a number of different things, even went so far as to enable the hidden admin account and try that way.. same thing.... it DOES however work in safe mode, up until it tells me I can't do it in safe mode.. but checking compatibility only took about 6 min with full HDD accessing the whole time.

if anyone has a clue, It would be most appreciated...I can't really do a full reinstall cause I have way to much important things I can't lose

ok an update, this was resolved.. at least partly....
the slow access was resolved. Found out by MB doesn't like IDE AND sata (wouldn't even run in ahci mode wiht both attached).. rerouted some things, added a pci IDE card slowness gone)
now it says I can't upgrade windows 7 profession with windows 7 professional...lol
I had downloaded the media refresh version with sp1..apparently I need the regular w/sp1
