Win7 RC1 - How long should an upgrade take?

Yeah, the upgrade advisor also told me I'd have no problems. I disabled Trend Micro, but I have a sneaky suspision that I'm actually going to have to uninstall it instead. Again, I'm just being stubborn.

Either way I'll wait until next week to see if any feedback has been put into updates for the install.

So, I got to 62% and my log files are from the 18th of April, not sure why it restored old log files but anyway, i'll try removing all the crap I don't need including AVG and seeing if that makes a difference.

Thanks.

Right, removed AVG and anything else i didn't need including some networking drivers and the ATI drivers, got to 62% and guess what? It's hung! again! so far, Vista is better than Windows 7, at least I could install Vista.

May I ask will you open the dvd \sources\cversion.ini and post the contents here. strange but I think to upgrade your version you need to change the cversion. to enable upgrade from Vista...

62 is the magic number!

10 hours into this I'm at 62 percent. 829999 of 1098134 files. Originally I thought something went wrong and rolled back. Try again and its made it this far maby tomorrow ill have windows 7? So far I know you all are going to love this. 2 laptops upgraded from vista to beta7 to r c7 with no problems. Yes the c version trick worked. Now my home machine is either stuck for good at 62 % or its taking time not to screw up all the files on a raid 5 setup. Should know more tomorrow. For those who can't wait to say your not supposed to beta to rc well I have my thumbs in my ears and I'm sticking my tongue out at you! It works on two other machines fine. Some of us have gotten used to using these enough to not want to reinstall everything for every new version. If I can use 7beta/rc over vista until I pay for the official 7 I will. Until then we now have 2 documented cases that at 62 percent upgrade it hangs. Could it be system configuration or all those fun programs we don't feel like reinstalling? Well beta to 7 it recommended to uninstall the 2005 s q l server and partition magick that had been on this machine for years! Ygr machine is a 680i board with q6600 8gb ram 6x500gb drives 4 DVD burners 1 8600gts nvidia card, two raidmax pci express controllers just for additional ide and one of the burners is Sata, a pci usb 4 Port and a pinacle hd TV pci. Card. If this don't go up from 62 by tomorrow I'm going to start bareboneing it out till 7 upgrades. Thinking it may have to do with the raid controlers as those are usually at fault when the installation can't figure out how the software raid is set up.

Awesome, you're attempting the upgrade and i'm doing an "nondestructive" upgrade (never had that many programs installed just wanted to save the 300 gigs of files), the "clean install" doesn't appear to have a progress percentage but, it is going just as slowly but I do have high hopes for this one.

We'll see how either of these turn out!

Well basically your cversion says you can upgrade only from 7077 or higher to 7100 RC. or you can CLEAN INSTALL. MinClient 7077.0 = you can install from this version or higher only.

1. upgrade to 7077 then upgrade to 7100.
2. CLEAN INSTALL and then use Transfer all files to another computer. (that suks).
3. rip the iso to HD then modify cversion.ini to read MinClient=7000.0
4. burn the new iso and then upgrade.
5. this should work unless all the attempts to upgrade with a version told not to... has corrupted Vista till it will not work...
6. if this will not work. upgrade to SP2-18005 then try to upgrade with the modified cversion.

If that is true then how come it got to 62% of the LAST step? Anyway, I have chosen to do a nondestructive install.

Apparently some day maybe when the next Official version is offered or the next "Unofficial leak" you will get Vista Upgraded.
Good luck and I do hope you find a way.

I don't think the RC is even ready for upgrading over Vista while you can easily perform an upgrade repair install of the same build.

Upgrade by download? You could already be running the 32bit or 64bit RC right now by download and burn to disk where you boot from that over trying the slow ketchup method. By booting off the disk 7 will pack things up for Vista in about 20 minutes over the hour after hour method you are trying if a direct upgrade didn't work out.

Well, it's done, it BSOD's after shutting down but apart from that, it is installed and I do still have all my files on the same drive.

Windows 7 was definitly worth the wait, although, it did take 5 hours to do a clean install, seems it (from the logs) it kept failing to install drivers properly and so, it kept waiting for the devices to respond.

Take a close look at any information seen on the next blue screen as well as looking over the logs for the event viewer. BSODs generally point out a specific device driver error like for the video card or sound even other addon devices.

For a clean install by booting from a dvd-r burned or by way of a usb key made up the estimated time for reaching the first desktop after proving profile information for the admin account is about 20 minutes. From there the rest depends on what programs will go on as well as the necessary hardware drivers/softwares.

Don't feel bad! When suggesting a clean install of the RC to someone lately rather then worry about repairing a Vista install everything took 8hrs.! That was after concerns that a clean install install of Vista would take far longer then that. The installation went well and that's one happy camper running 7 instead! :D

Take a look in the device manager under usb devices there to see if anything is yellow marked. Sounds like the default generic controller drivers never went on fully. For the usb tv you may have to go through some womderful moments like seen here trying to get that working depending on what drivers that comes with on the software disk as well as what is available at the support site.

What was seen here wasn't Vista drivers but actually the 32bit XP drivers that saw the pci tv tuner here working on the 64bit 7. Have to block the Vista update all the time for that since those will knock it out right off the bat!

For stubborn installations when those are seen here while not often I'll first backup anything not already backed up and proceed to actually remove the present primary entirely. From there I'll see a brand new replacement take the place for the next clean install of whichever version or edition of Windows will go on.

It sounds a little drastic but I see favorable results if you are trying to install a fresh copy on the Vista primary with the custom option for replacing one installation with a new one or seeing that go on a partition following a reformat. At times a reformat isn't enough to prevent seeing a bad install which seems to be what happened to you there unless the burn to disk wasn't complete or you need to go for a second download.

For usb devices like illuminated keyboards and the tv tuner you have there you may have to add on a small usb hub. Sometimes an addon or new style keyboard will pull a little too much on the usb bus itself seeing problems.

Well, everything is fixed and the BSOD's are down to my tv card which only half works but, Hauppauge (or at least the users on their forums) say that there's a bug in the usb drivers windows 7 installs and can be seen by replacing the usb drivers in 7 with the vista ones which stops all further BSOD's relating to the TV card, seems like more bugs keep creeping up in the RC. I hope they can get it right.
