Hi Guys

I have a Gateway NV53 Laptop.

It's retail bought with no Win7 DVD.

The computer crashed and could not be fixed with the Win7 recovery disc - it couldn't find the Win7 installation. The crash was the infamous "bootmgr is missing". I tried fixing it but not possible (Did alot of google'ing) Now I'm backing up the files and trying to reinstall it though. My problem is that I have no Win 7 DVD to install from so what do I do?

Thanks alot!

There is one other thing you can do. == Your PC has a sticker on it somewhere with your Win 7 Key. If you can borrow a friends copy of Win 7, you can use it to install and put your Win 7 Key in. This will be a legal install.

Hi danishboy90, welcome to the forums :)

You should find that when you first turn your laptop on you get a prompt similar to...
Press F2 to enter setup or F10 for Recovery

If you get the option then choose 'Recovery' as this will allow you restore your machine to factory settings.
   Information
For a few years now, suppliers have been doing away with install CD/DVD's as they set up a recovery partition in order for you recover your system to the point where you first opened the lid & turned it on

Hope it helps :)

Excellent advice Ted but if the bootmgr file is missing there's really no way of getting to any sort of system/startup repair without having a disk to boot from ;)

Forgive me (i've just finished work) but the 'Within Windows' bit still wont work if you can't get anything started due to 'bootmgr missing'. It's the first thing Windows looks for when trying to boot. If that's gone then you cannot boot unless you have a DVD (i had the same happen this morning ;))..

If you're going to comment on this stuff, please look at it, here's the same link in the tutorial, Option Two shows how to download a repair CD from NeoSmart that can be used to boot the PC.

Then if you can't get into Windows, Option Two in this tutorial shows how to boot to diskpart to mark the Windows partition as active so the startup repairs can be done to get Windows booting again on its own.

If the Win7 Repair CD still cannot find an installation, try manually running bootrec commands from the Recovery TOols Command Line: bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot. This can often goose the installation to appear if not get it started.

Once installation appears, run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots until it starts. Make sure it is still marked Active from the Command Line using the steps given in the tutorial Ted linked.

Thanks alot guys! As mentioned I already created the repair disc that couldn't fix the problem because it couldn't find any windows installation. I'm currently backing up the files over the network since I don't have an external HD yet. :( Now I'm putting the files in a public folder on another computer. When it's all transfered to that folder, can I then consider it backed up and go ahead and reset to factory settings?

I chatted with a gateway guy on their online support and he said do the F10 thing so I'm going to tried that as soon as it's backed up :)

Excited!

Hello again.

Yes as soon as you have the backups done I would assume you could go ahead but are you sure the Gateway guy said F10, here's the info I have no Gateway stuff.

   Information

Here are the Gateway Recovery Instructions.

1. Reboot, and press F11 or the R key to start the recovery process.
2. Select either "Full System Restore (Destructive)" or "Full System Restore (With Backup)"*.
3. Click "Next", and then click "Yes" to confirm the recovery process.
4. Wait for the computer to restore itself. When it is done, click "Reboot" to reboot the computer.

*Full System Restore With Backup preserves data in the My Documents folder, but requires 4 GB of disk space.

Did you try these extra steps to try to get your installation to show in Repair console?

Unless the Win7 installation is ruined, it will most times be detected by running bootrec commands, then it should repair if it shows. But repair often needs to be run more than once.
