After installing Win7 dual boot with XP on a Gateway 700LTD, I cannot shut it down. The PC restarts about a second after seemingly normal shutdown. Same now with the XP side, although I can get XP to hibernate while Win7 won't even do that - restarts seconds after it goes into hibernation. BIOS settings are all at default. No peripherals attached yet. Any suggestions?

Needs a BIOS update but only one available is from floppy which we don't have (floppy drive disconnected on this machine). Also won't boot from CD.

Im really surprised that you were able to get it installed at all with the specs you have. These are the minimum requirements to run Windows 7 reliably... and you dont meet them....

  • 1 GHz processor (32- or 64-bit)
  • 1 GB of RAM (32-bit); 2 GB of RAM (64-bit)
  • 16 GB of available disk space (32-bit); 20 GB of available disk space (64-bit)
  • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
My advice is to either replace your computer with an up to date one, or stick with XP..

Runs fine, fast as XP and my 2-4 gig machines. Pentium 4 must help. But I'm also running Win7 on an old HP 510 notebook 1.4 Celeron 528 ram and it is as fast as XP, too, and is faster now with RTM than RC.

Good luck with your problem...
