Win7 setup does not continue after first reboot.

I have a 32bit XP installed in C: and I want to install 64bit Win 7 on D:. I have used the usb download tool to make a bootable usb drive and installed Win7 till the 1st reboot. However after the reboot, it just returns to page 1 of the installation (select language, drive to install into etc). If I change the boot priority to HDD first, then it just boots into XP as if nothing has ever happened.

I have tried searching for the answer for more than 5 hours now and all the fixes dont seem to work. It is as though my computer cant detect that Win 7 is installed halfway.


PC Specs: E6750 C2D , Gigabyte G41-MTS2PT, 4GB ram, Sapphire 5750 512mb. 2x 160gb hdd.

Is there something I can do from windows XP that can help progress this setup?

Have you formatted the USB Drive to NTFS format?

You can read the procedure to install Windows 7 on a USB Drive at How To Boot And Install Windows 7 From USB Flash Drive or http://maketecheasier.com/updated-boot-and-install-windows-7-from-usb-flash-drive/2009/09/12

The procedure is fairly complicated. It would be much easier to install Windows 7 on another hard disk partition.

I'll try the tutorial in the link you pasted. Why is it easier to install in another partition? C: and D: are on the same physical HDD. Is there any benefits of installing on totally seperate hard drives?

I thought you were attempting to install Windows 7 on the USB Flash Drive. Installing Windows 7 with Windows XP already installed on the same HDD is reasonably simple.

As you have two different HDDs, the best practice is to install the different OSs in two different physical drives.

Firsr, unplug the SATA and power cables of the HDD containing C drive (XP installed). Then Install Windows 7 in the other one. After installation is completed, reconnect the HDD previously remover. Make it sure that before opening the case, you are unplugging the power source.

Generally, the boot menu key for Gigabyte is F12. While power on the computer, press and hold F12, you will get the list of disks to boot from. Just select which one you need using the scroll arrow keys, and hit enter.

If , by any chance you want to have a dual boot, install EasyBCD in windows 7, and add a boot entry for XP using it.

You are letting it boot back to the setup? You are not hitting a key when prompted to boot from a CD/DVD?

I have the same problem - still not cleared , refer to my post " win 7 impossible" in installation and setup - with a multiboot system ( with Linux ) : after the first reboot , impossible to re-enter into the install process !
have you cleared the matter ? and how ? of course, the suggestion to install win7 on a separate HD( or SSD ) is not an option for me .
