I am helping a friend that has a Toshiba laptop. It has been sitting for a few years. She says that when she logs on the laptop turns off. I have tried a repair disc (no help). I seems that all you have to do is power the device on and it will shut off in about 45 sec t6 a minute. In the logs that I was able to find about 2 years ago there was an update. I have pulled the hard drive out and am looking at it with my laptop. I was hoping to find a way to fix the corrupted files. Thank you for your time.

Hi rnrkeeper, welcome to Seven Forums,

Just a few suggestions.
Was there a particular reason she stopped using it?
Is she sure she is using the correct password?
Does the power lead work?
Have you tried taking the battery out and booting it with only the power lead?
Can you get into Safe Mode? If you can, try running sfc /scannow [yes there is a space there] from the command prompt. The sfc /scannow command will scan all the protected system files and replace any corrupted files with a cached copy.

I hope this helps!

That was the reason she quit using it. It would power up then shut off while she was logging on. I tried just powering the machine up and it would shut off even with out any kyb input within 45 second to a minute. The battery is pretty bad I am going to get her a new one.

Hi rnrkeeper,

The battery is pretty bad I am going to get her a new one.

I would hold off on getting a new battery unless we can get it working off the mains lead.
As I mentioned above, does it still cut out if you take the battery out and boot it with the mains lead?

I hope this helps!

Hi rnrkeeper,

Can you get into Safe Mode or does it still cut out?
If you can, disable ALL the Startup items and Reboot.
Have you got a Windows 7 Installation Disc or is there a Factory Partition?
If you have a Windows 7 installation disc, it has a System Repair option and a Command Prompt option that we might be able to boot into and use.

I hope this helps!

As it turned out the battery was about stone dead, I pulled the battery out and it booted up. I guess the power supply could not keep a steady voltage with the battery installed. I got a new battery and it boots up but now the drivers for the Ethernet, controller and PCI comm(?) are not there according to the device manager. I went to Toshiba support and they gave me a list of drivers. I tried some that I thought would work but the manager said NO DEAL. I gave the serial numbers but that did not change the filter any.

Have a look in Control Panel under Device Manager & see what is listed in Network Adapters, which should be where Ethernet Controllers are listed. Also have a look in Programs & Features & see if there is a Realtek Ethernet Controller listed, if so then search the Toshiba website for a driver update. See if there may be a different brand showing by scrolling through all Programs.

If it shows a different brand on Ethernet Controller in Device Manager search the Toshiba site for that brand.
