Hi All,
I am a member of a seniors citizen club and look after about 5 desktops and 4 laptops with updates, antivirus and the rest of it. This particular desktop while installing updates, this is what I get (see screen shot). Selecting either option nothing happens, just a blank black screen. Is there a way to get to safe mode or get it to start?
Thanks in advance.
Jim

Thanks Noel, I wasn't sure that you could create a repair disk on another computer to use as a repair. I'll have go and see what happens. Will keep you posted.

Good day Noel, I had a go with a usb repair stick, it does not even read it. What is the best way to reset BIOS ?
If I take the CMOS battery out, would that reset the BIOS ? I think the problem may be that when it starts, it does not
complete POST. What do you think?

If the machine doesn't complete POST, then it won't boot at all, no matter what you do - yes, removing the CMOS battery for a few minutes (I find one or two usually works - some place recommend at least 30 mins) will reset the CMOS to default, and may help.

I think I've seen that screen when the cmos battery needed replacing. The cmos normally remembers the hardware config, but if the battery fails, it needs to go into setup again (hence F2 message). That said, you can usually get into the BIOS, where you would see that the date was wrong (proving that the battery was kaput). Since the OP gets no keyboard response, I'm wondering if the kb is usb - even if the BIOS usb setting was originally 'legacy' (usb works before Windows is loaded), a battery fail would revert BIOS to default, which is maybe 'usb not legacy'. If the kb is usb - try a ps/2 kb.

The BIOS says 2006 - if that's the orig battery, it's done well !

Hi badcrc, I suspect that what might have happened, the computer has been turned off while it was updating. This is where we teach some of our members, but some are really not computer literate. Anyway, I'll see what happens I might replace the CMOS battery. Thanks for the info. The keyboard is usb.

Cheers, Jim
