Hello & thanks in advance for your input!

I have attached my SF_Diagnostic_Tool file, per instructions. This is the first BSOD I've seen on this PC.

My laptop was asleep & unplugged. Suddenly, the PC showed BSOD. I booted into Safe Mode & copied this information off of a pop-up that appeared:

Welcome aboard.

The cause of your crash is Avast. avast! Virtualization Driver first:

And then it is avast! Self Protection Driver.
Code:

It is hampering your network performance a great lot. And that is causing the crash. Uninstall avast and use Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows.

Free up the startup.

  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
  3. Select the “Startup” tab.
  4. Deselect all items other than the antivirus.
  5. Apply > OK
  6. Accept the restart.
Let us know the results.

Arc,
Thank you for finding what program was causing the problem. I uninstalled Avast & will give MS Security Essentials a try for a while. I also disabled most of the startup programs.

Besides MS Security Essentials, are there other free anti-virus progs that you recommend?

A few family members of mine are running Avast -- now, I may have to change several machines.

It is hampering your network performance a great lot.

Also, what information tells you that Avast was choking my network? The 2 PC's on my network were occasionally slow to connect to our Internet service, but beyond that ... we hadn't really noticed a major problem.

I want to learn so that I can be a better user. Thank you!

A huge lot of tcpip.sys, tunnel.sys and NETIO.sys errors were there in the stack, alongwith the avast things, being mixed up. All those things are network related. So it was easy to decide that the network performance is being hampered here by avast, mainly by the avast self protection.

Avast works good usually, but for your case it is causing problems. Bad luck. MSE never causes a problem that the other AV programs do :)

Arc,
Those errors were in the dump file, correct?

I see I need to learn how to read dump files - WhoCrashed said nothing about network instability or Avast.
