Win7 will not join Win8 homegroup

Just purchased a Win8.1 and set up a first-time home group. But my old Win7 home premium just cannot be coaxed into joing it. Have tried everything without luck. Do they actually work together?

Oh yes, Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 can be in the same homegroup. I have one setup with my Windows 8.1 and a Windows 7 on a virtual machine.

As a test, have all computers leave the homegroup to be able to start over fresh.

Afterwards, create a homegroup in Windows 8.1, and join the homegroup in Windows 7. Double check the details in the tutorials below to help make sure everything is set properly for the homegroup to see if that may help.
