Ok, I tried to ping from my Win7 PC to the xp pc via cmd prompt and it said destination host is unreachable.... I really need to get this server up and running. Anyone have any ideas? They both are on the same workgroup, etc... and I disable ipv6 on my network adapter.

Yup I did that, and I doubt you need IPv6 for networking as it would be incompatible with other computers/servers running only IPv4 which is still the standard in networking.

Since you've made sure that your Windows XP and Windows 7 machine are in the same Workgroup, you will need to install the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder on your XP machine that can be downloaded here. This will enable your XP machine to communicate with your Windows 7 computer. You also want to visit "Network Sharing Center" then select "Chance advanced network setting" and select the ones appropriate for your setup. To help you diagnose your network sharing issue, make sure that you have at least one folder shared both on your Windows XP and Windows 7 machine.
Please let us know how this turns out

Pretty basic check but are the machines on the same subnet and is a firewall blocking access? try opening port 445 in addition to 135 to 138 on all machines.

Im having the same problem as xbxhkh. I also have my 7 via wireless and my XP machine is my wired workhorse that is the hub of all info for the house however it is not capable of running vista or 7 properly without upgrades. i tried to do as nosferatux said and dl and imstall the LLTD but then get a KB922120 set-up error that reads
setup has detected that the service pack version of this system is newer than the update that you are applying.
There is no need to install this update
now what? my seven machine is still ignoring my XPs and seven being as advanced as it is supposed to be, is acting real dumb when it comes to lan discovery, and we are actually given less tools to work with it seems.
Am going to post a possible solution, tho i am not confident if this was the FIX for this problem, tho i havent reinstalled the network a 2nd time to see if the same problems appear as they did with the first time install.
There is one noticeable option that has been added to the network sharing center / advanced sharing. Thats the encryption part/option. Instead of using the 128 try using the 40-56 bit encryption.
I say this because this was one of three options i did at once, instead of one at a time, to fix the problem here.
