Win7 won't detect any wireless device, I think....

Hello guys.

I had a Trust wireless presenter mouse running quite happily on Windows 7. Then one day it stopped working, gutted.

to my dismay I couldn't get this to work at all. Grrrr, angry.

So I bought a new Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 1000 kit, which is a keyboard and mouse both running wirelessly off a 2.4GHz (I think) receiver.

Unfortunatly I cannot get this to work. not at all.

I've tried the drivers off the CD, I've tried the drivers from the website, zippo. It's really weird.

There are NO written instructions, just a little 'quick start' guide which is a picture of a finger pushing a button to connect to the receiver. I've tried this too many times and nothing at all seems to happen. I've tried about 9 different sets of batteries too, so it's not the power that's an issue.

I am on Windows 7 RC 7100. The Microsoft website claims this keyboard is compatible with Windows 7.

I had a slight thought that perhaps some sort of driver went wrong, which would explain why the Trust presenter mouse stopped working and now this doesn't work either. Grrr the confusion!

What to do guys, what to do?

Hi Jack, welcome to the forums.

Are you getting any devices with yellow (error) flags in device manager?

Where are you plugging the wireless receiver into your PC?

If it's a USB port,,,,,, have you tried using a different port?

Those ports do sometimes go bad, ya know.

Wireless keyboards and mice are to me nothing but a huge pain in the drain.
I won't use one.

Have you tried a simple wired mouse?

Doc

Are the drivers for vista or XP? if so you may need to install them in compatibility mode. could you give us more info about the hardware. Also as tews suggest you should take a peek in device manager (type device manager in search). Also look in event viewer (type event in search) goto windowslog>applications tab and see what errors are there.

Let us know

Ken

Thanks for your help everyone! I really appreciate it.

Are you getting any devices with yellow (error) flags in device manager?

Nope. No yellow flags.

If it's a USB port,,,,,, have you tried using a different port?

Those ports do sometimes go bad, ya know.

Wireless keyboards and mice are to me nothing but a huge pain in the drain.
I won't use one.

Have you tried a simple wired mouse?

I'm using a wired mouse at the moment, but I prefer wireless personally. I have spent my money on this keyboard and mouse set and would like to get it to work, although thanks for your comments.

I have tried in 2 different back ports and the two ports on the front. The receiver lights up (it has 3 lights, Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Power). The power LED lights up nomatter which port it's in so it's definitely receiving power.

Are the drivers for vista or XP? if so you may need to install them in compatibility mode. could you give us more info about the hardware.

The drivers are directly from Microsoft for Windows 7 x64.

There is lots of info about the product here: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=058

I downloaded the drivers through the link on that page, although I have tried the ones on the supplied CD too (same effect).

Also look in event viewer (type event in search) goto windowslog>applications tab and see what errors are there.

No events related at all to it. I've checked very thoroughly too.

Thanks for all the help so far!

OK guys this is REALLY confusing now...

When I have my new wireless keyboard on the desk, I thought for ages it was connected to the receiver, but obviously not working correctly. For example, the Num Lock light on the receiver was lit up. I thought this was from the wireless keyboard (however when I pressed Num Lock on the keyboard, the indicator on the receiver didn't change). However I realised, the indicator was simply displaying the status of my old PS/2 keyboard which was plugged in at the side to let me still use my computer!

The receiver lights change when my wired old keyboard is plugged in. Which leads me to think that the keyboard and mouse are not even connected to the receiver.

When I unplug the PS/2 keyboard and sit the wireless on my desk, the receiver never even seems to pick it up.

I think this is no longer a software/driver etc. issue but rather why the receiver isn't picking up the keyboard.

Unless I'm wrong. You guys are the experts :P

If you've not long bought them i'd look to replacing the reciever or the whole set if they are still under warranty.

I'll do some googling for anything that might help :p

Do both the reciever & mouse/keyboard have reset/connection buttons? You may have tried already but press both the reciever & mouse/keyboard at the same time.

Also, what about batteries? (yes, i know, very lame question but you never know)...

First, only plug in one keyboard at a time. DO NOT plug/unplug PS/2 devices while the PC is on.

Now, on the USB receiver, press the homing (whatever name) button. All lights startcycling. Now, push the smal homin button on the bottom of the mouse or keyboard. Keep pressure until the cycling lights on the receiver stop and one goes steady.

Thanks for your suggestion but I am STILL having no luck. The lights start cycling, I keep holding down the keyboard or mouse button, and eventually after about a minute they stop cycling and just the power button is lit up. Still no response from the keyboard or mouse.

Both receiver and keyboard and mouse have these buttons. I have tried your suggestion but still no luck.

And I have tried with about 4 sets of fresh batteries too...

This was an eBay purchase from a reputable seller. They accept returns but only if the product is proved faulty. I would really like to find a solution to this, rather than fork out £5 just to post it back...

You have attempted the solution.

You did not mention if either device lights up when you put in "fresh" batteries.

And just to certain, I must mention that you should use a small pointed object to push the buttons - not your finger.

Also, the maximum effective range of this set is about five feet.
