Win7 X64 - x86 problems...

I keep having huge problems with Win7 x64... anytime I install a program which wants to install or use files in the ...\program files (x86) directory conflicts develop...

Windows 7 x64 ultimate N - Microsoft Security Essentials as my Firewall/Antivirus

Quite often I get the error "you do not have Permission to access this file" kind of error...

It appears the problem is with user permissions - I always run as an Administrator...

Right click and run installs as Administrator...

Very frustrating... making me a "hater"

Do you get these "You do not have permissision" errors before, during or after installing a program? If you're getting them after the installation, when you run the new program, then the program in question is trying to write to the "Program Files (x86)" or "Program File" directories, which it shouldn't be doing in the first place...

First of all, user permissions have nothing to do with whether your OS is 64-bit or 32-bit.

Secondly, many programs want to modify system-protected folders - i.e. write something in System32, Program Data and so on - when they are installing themselves. While turning off UAC is one way to deal with it, I would not recommend doing so. My advice would be to make sure you trust the program you want to install and then run the installer "as administrator". This will remove most of the problems such as what you describe.

There is of course the compatibility issue. Depending on which programs you want to install, some 32-bit programs are compatible with Windows x64, some run in compatibility mode and some (although this happens rarely as far as I know) don't run at all. This also might be a case. If you have questions regarding particular software, please post back the name of the app that's giving you trouble and we'll try to help you with that.

The only way I can get many programs and network access to other computers is by running as "administrator" the default one set up upon installation.

Trying to install in compatibility mode does not help. Most programs in x86 seem to want to read and write to the programs files (x86) folder... an common example is Firefox 3.6x and later...

To run installers as "administrator" I am logged in as admin and right click and choose the shield option for Run as Administrator... still same problem quite often before install, some stop during and then after will not run...

Firefox, Carbonite, Pogoplug are common programs which have given me issues with installations...
