Hi, new here...

I've read a couple of posts, but none quite touch on my issue. I have a small home network; 3 PCs hardwired through a mini switch to my broadband router. 2 PCs are Win7 (lets call them PC1 & PC2), another Desktop is XP.

Now everything has been work perfect since the beginning, and I've mapped network drives to all the PCs, ie every PC has a network drive of every other PC on it.

Now here's the problem:

Three days ago I wiped PC1 and reinstalled a fresh copy of Win7. I kept everything the same as before, including the IP address etc. But now, for some bizarre reason, it wont login to my XP machine. From the XP machine I can still go to PC1's mapped network drive or simply just type in its IP address in Explorer, then it'll prompt me for the login details, I enter it and voilà, I have access.

BUT, it stopped working the other way round. When I'm on my Win7 machine, ie PC1, I can type the XP machine's IP address into explorer, and then as normal it would prompt me for the login details. Now here's the problem, when I input the username & password Win7 tells me it's wrong!

I can ping both ways with 0% loss, so the connection itself is not the problem. I tried everything I know of... Does anybody know of a possible solution?

Supposidly to fix that problem you need to use a password on the XP machine. Also using the same User name and password on all machines will get rid of the password prompts. Turning off simple file sharing on the XP machine can also help fix this problem.

Or if you don't want to use passwords on the XP machines you can switch to Guest only "less secure" by going into the local security policies on the XP machine.

Go to... Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy > Local Policies > Security Options

Scroll down to... Network Access: Sharing and security model for local accounts

Select... Guest only and not Classic. I checked on XP machine and Guest seems to be the default.

@ryo:
There is no network drive, it's a fresh install. Anyway, I have not changed any passwords.

@chev65:
I prefer different passwords for different machines. Simple file sharing is off, I hate it.

Still, the question remains, why can I ping from Win7 to XP, but not log in. I have not changed a single thing in XP. I only reinstalled Win7. Before the reinstall everything worked perfect, so obviously the issue is with Win7. But again, I have Win7 set up exactly as before, so I'm totally baffled...
