Win764it Keeps Making My Drives Read-Only

Win 64Bit Keeps making my drives Disk (Volume) attributes "read-only". I can Unlock the drives by using the command prompt and using diskpart to clear the attributes on each drive and volume, but this is tedious, and I have to do it almost every day. What is causing this and what can I do?
I have a feeling it may be related to another problem I have. I tried to change my homegroup settings but closed down my PC before it had finished making the changes. Now, when I try to change the homegroup settings all I see is a notice saying that it is still sharing my Libraries, or something similar. This message is permanent, and I can make no changes. What can I do about this issue please?

do you have a backup to restore from? You can also run system file checker (sfc /scannow). You can try a repair install, or you can restore from backup\\Ken

Yes, I do have a backup, but not that recent, about a month ago, so I could use that at a push.
How do I run system file checker (sfc /scannow)? I haven't heard of that before.
I could try Repair install. Which method would you suggest I try first please?

Hey

Long shot here -but are you running a RAID0 setup on a Gigabyte board? I had the same issue for years; my setup kept locking my drives to read only... Happened on vista all the time and then i ditched the raid so dont know if it persisted to win7

If not ignore this.

great question about raid. If not the sfc /scannow is easy In search type cmd, and in the window that opens type sfc /scannow it will run and check your system files

ok do you know which drives are plugged into the Gigabye SATA controller? For me it was the drives plugged in those (purple on my board) that gave me the problem... I only ever had the issue when the drives were in RAID but maybe its the Gigabyte SATA controller (as my raid was set up on it)

If you are running 6 drives and have 8 SATA ports i suggest moving them all onto the intel controller if they are not already

All my drives are SATA drives, and I am using 7 ports as my DVD burner is also SATA. I'm not sure what you mean by Intel controller. I should just point out that I am no computer expert. This machine was built to my specs by a friend who is an IT pro. Unfortunately, he is ill and I can't speak to him at the mo.

Ah ok i didnt realise.
-------------------------------------
Task 1

Can you reboot the pc - and on initial startup boot into the BIOS (DEL key i believe) and write the drives and what connection they are on...

Usually along the lines of primary master: Drive

--------------------------------------
Task 2

Basically what im asking you to do if your comfortable doing it is to turn off the pc, take off the side case and look ad the hard drives and the one cd drive, and see which colour SATA port they are plugged in on on the motherboard.

There will be 6 ports on the motherboard of one colour (light blue i think) and 2 ports that are of another (purple..)

What i would like to know is if there is a drive connected to the purple one, if it is the drive that is going to read only...

So can you at first post a 'diagram' of what ports are connected to what drives: ie

blue1 = drive (if possible give as much as possible) ie the size
blue 2 = drive 2
purple 1 = drive 3

you get the idea -- if not pass this to your friend who may be able to remember how he built it.

---------------------------------

Hopefully this helps -- may have made a mistake or 2 in there but its early hours here. Basically once we have a better idea of how the drives are connected we can see if it is to blame or not
