Hi everyone,

I installed Winamp and it can't play any media files (MP3, AVI, etc.). At first I thought it was something wrong with Winamp and Windows 7. In Winamp, I select a an mp3 file, hit play, and nothing happens. I then installed AIMP, and it behaves exactly the same as Winamp. The only media program that seems to work is Windows Media Player. Any ideas as to what might be wrong?

Winamp is my default program.

I did forget to mention something, when I try to open up a file in Winamp (as well as AIMP), I have "All supported types" selected, but I see no files listed. I find that very odd, it seems like Winamp does not support mp3 or wmv files. I did install K-Lite Codec Pack installed.

[FONT=verdana, arial, helvetica]Just a little follow up.

I found something in the Event Viewer that might be the cause of my problem, but I'm not sure what it means.

Hi there
Works fine

I'm running W7 X-64

Download the latest version -- it mentions W7 compatability too.

I use it mainly for FAST CD ripping to FLAC with Gracenote tagging - better IMO than Freedb. It also plays media fine.

Cheers

I do have the latest version of Winamp installed (5.572), also AIMP is the latest version (2.60.530). I don't think the issue is with Winamp or AIMP, I think it's something with Windows 7. Either something is not configured correctly, or I'm missing something.

I get the same PCA2 error when I run EA's F1 Challenge, but despite that, I still have sound in that game.

Yup, I went through the file associations. Either way though, even if mp3s were associated with Windows Media Player, shouldn't another media player be able to play them as well? I mean doc files are associated to Microsoft Word, but I can still open a doc file using OpenOffice.

Yeah, they should...I can play them with WMP or MediaMonkey. I am baffled by your situation, I must say.

I have same problem, using win7, and latest winamp. Freezes up when I try to start playing a song. But works sometimes. Takes a long time to start though, like 1 min.

Backup your PC and ...

Backup your PC and try running Winamp (or the other program) as Administrator.

Another thing you could try is to start the installer and then cancel it.
This often provokes Windows into offering to install it with the "Recommended Settings" (whatever that means).

Have you tried the Troubleshooting or Windows Program Compatibility Troubleshooter (in the Action Center)?

Do you have the correct output plugin selected in Winamp (Nullsoft DirectSound Output)?

I've been running Winamp since Windows 7 (b7048) with no playback problems.
It works on the 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Windows 7 (for me at least).

I switched to Winamp, after WMP 12 "savaged" the file names and details of ~900 of my mp3s (the very first time I tried it).
