I have a problem:
When I play music using winamp I don't hear sound the way I'm supposed to. Every now and then the sound distorts somehow. Tried to play music with WMP12 and getting the same problem (but sound less frequently distorts). Tried to watch videos and that kinda distorts too.
I think I somehow figured out the problem... When I'm using BSPlayer to watch videos the problem doesn't appear so I tried to listen to music in BSPlayer and it works great. Figured that BSPlayer uses ffdshow codecs for both video and audio, and Windows media player and probably winamp too uses some windows built-in codecs. Tried to override them but failed. Found out on the net that with Zoom player you can choose which decoder you want to use so I downloaded that player and in player options choose to use ffdshow audio decoder and the sound plays perfectly.

So I was wondering if I could somehow force winamp or windows media player to use ffdshow? Because Zoom player sucks, and BSPlayer sucks and I really like winamp or WMP so I want to listen to music with it but that distortions are really annoying. Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm using windows 7 beta build 7137 and I think the problem started when I Installed that version of windows. But I like windows 7 much more than I like XP or vista so going back to vista is out of question. Have latest realtek drivers, latest ffdshow and latest winamp.

I dont have a cure for winamp and WMP, but since 7137 is an early rev they might have fixed the problem in newer builds Yeah I know upgrading is a pain but as a last resort I would go for 7260.

Hope someone has a winamp, WMP cure

Ah, I don't feel like upgrading... especially if Seven official is going out in october. I guess that Zoom player will have to do.

So no way in WMP to use ffdshow?

Seems to me the idea is to fix the codecs which are broke! All the other solutions are workarounds and ultimately unsatisfactory.
Upgrading is imo a bit of overkill but on the other hand I'm pretty useless when it comes to codecs.
Just to throw a pretty lame idea up and see where it comes down, what about installing one of the "universal" codec packs like K-Lite and hoping it overwrites the bum ones you've got - I remember it looks after uninstalling existing codecs during its own install. (whether its OK with 7 I've no idea).

Welcome to SevenForums - hope we can find a fix for you.

I have K-Lite installed. That's how i got my hands on ffdshow in the first place.

I read somewhere on the net that WMP12 uses some windows built in codecs and uses only those for mp3, so a codec pack is useless for WMP becouse whatever codec pack I use WMP is going to use Windows codecs.

I did a little research on the net and found out some way to override windows codecs, but I didn't try it out yet. Will let you know when I do.

I hope we can find a fix for me too :)

btw here's the link for what I'm trying to do:
