I have an HP Pavilion that came with Vista. About two months ago I upgraded it to Windows 7. It has NEVER performed since without random freezes and lock ups. I have also installed Explorer 8 and automatically install updates to both. A couple of weeks ago I started to get an error with Explorer 8 which might be related to windows live mail but not sure. I get the following Problem Report Detail whenever it happens. Dose anyone have a recommendation about how to fix it?

Here's the Problem report:

Welcome

Are you using the term upgrade correctly. Did you upgrade with an upgrade DVD or do a clean install with the upgrade DVD? The answer will have a big impact on the advice that you will be given. If you reinstalled all or your programs it was a clean install.

It was an upgrade. Since I had Vista and it was a relatively new computer, it seemed that an upgrade was appropriate. I did not reinstall the programs.

The advice you would get from me and just about everyone else that sees this thread, will tell you to do a clean install, now. We can help with this problem, possibly, but you will have nothing but problems in the future.

If you want help with the install I and others will help.

Rich, I took your advice and posted the problem on the Crashes Thread along with a zipped file. I certainly agree with your recommendation that it is better to do a clean install but this is the only remaining problem that I have so if it isn't hard to fix, I'd prefer to do it. If not, then I'll go out and purchase a Full Install.

Should I close this thread? If so, can you advise how to do that?

You may not have to close the thread and you may not have to buy anything. How did you get windows 7, did you use the upgrade DVD? If so I can give you instructions on how to do a clean install with the upgrade DVD. The problem that you are having now may just be the tip of the iceberg, best to clean install.

If you take your time, dont panic and ask questions this will be easy. Read over this tutorial, tonight. Cheat, the way I did go to you tube and watch the clean install. It really is not hard. Just don't get nervous. I did a clean install and its really not a problem. The worst part is reinstalling the programs, but I did as needed and it was done quickly..

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html?filter[2]=General Tips

My advice has now changed, since I found out about the upgrade. I am no longer suggesting that we rectify this problem, just do a clean install.

Want to be sure that it is the right course, post a new thread give the facts and have a title should I do a clean install. You will get many, many opinions. I will be glad to help whatever you decide, but my opinion will not change.

If you want to try and repair, follow the instructions that I gave you previously. To close the thread just click on the middle icon, upper right. Then type solved and managment will close it.

Rich, It would be GREAT if I didn't have to purchase an entirely new windows7. The specific product that I purchased is Windows 7 Home Premium "Family Pack" for an Upgrade designed for Windows Vista". Does that help? I absolutely don't mind if it takes me extra time but I would like to avoid the extra cost to do a "clean" install. I see that you gave me a link as well. I will go to that to see what it says.

Jesse, just take your time, ask questions and read the tutorial. When you understand all that is in the tutorial, go to YouTube and watch how it is done, you can do it with no problem.

Rich,

I've heard enough. Will go ahead and do a "clean" install. I've read the references that you gave. When I put in the upgrade disk, can I just behave as if I am doing an XP upgrade (which is a clean install)? Also, I notice on my other computers that I've upgraded that have XP, that it keeps the old version as well in Windows.old (I think). Can I just erase that when I've gotten a good install?
thanks,
Jessepenn

I think that you are making the correct choice. Do not count on that windows.old. Back up everything on an external (HD etc). The windows.old is for documents that you may have forgotten to back up and some have complained about its efficeincy. I will be here for you. Take your time, and enjoy.

It will be basically the same as the Windows over XP.

You are going to be so happy with the results.

Once you are sure that you have not forgotten to backup something, delete windows.old. All it does is take up room. You can delete it by going to the c drive >properties>clean disc> including system files.

Good luck,

Richard,
Thank you, thank you for strongly encouraging me to do a CLEAN installation for the problem. I did it this morning. It was easy and had no problems. I really appreciate it.

I am really happy too. You finally have a brand new OS. What you had before was like an old car, that you painted and tuned up. Its the same old car, it just looks different.

Jesse, I just saw this thread, so I am a bit late to the "party". I have a HP Pavillion as well, that I went from Vista 32bit to Win 7 64 bit. The advice given was great, doing a "clean" (the term for what you did of course MS calls "custom") install is by far the best bet!

The only thing that I'd like to add, is that now that you have a newly installed OS, carefully re-install programs one-at-a-time, and evaluate each, prior to adding the next! Why? There is always a chance that a program may not get along well in win 7 (I had more of a concern about this as i also went from 32 bit OS to 64 bit), and it is easier to catch a misbehaving program if you take it slow, and make sure each program behaves well, before installing the next.

BTW, once your system is stable, and you have determined that everything is in order, keep in mind that you can get rid of the windows.old stuff, and reclaim a good bit of drive space.

TY for the advice, in addition after everything is working properly make a system restore point and a system image. Put the system image on an external hard drive. You will never have to reinstall, again.
