Hello to all,
Thought I'd start a thread on a problem I have been discussing in a separate SOLVED, thread.
I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit. After installation I tried and successfully used the Backup with and without System Image and System Image. This was backing up my System/Data C: drive to my backup F: Drive. Again, no apparent problems.
I reformatted my F: drive successfully. I have run sfc /scannow several times, I'm only assuming that it checks the 2nd drive as well as the System Drive. I have run chkdsk on both drives. None of the above process' indicate any problems.
The symptoms are as follows. If I do a System Image it works correctly. If I do a Backup with or without a System Image, using Windows Option, or set myself, the Computer indicates in View Progress box the a shadow copy of C: is being made, a System Image is being made, which completes successfully, a shadow of E: (the backup) drive is being made and then it fails. Under More Detail it indicates a 0x80070006 error seemingly referencing the E: Drive. No indications of a partial backup on E: is found although it appears that the System Image stored in the
WindowsImageBackup has the appropriate time. This was noted on a backup attempt with System Image.
One of your fine members gave me a link to a discussion of this problem. It suggested disabling Windows Media from Internet and to enable the Administrator account. I have done both with no change.
As a novice above XP, another suggestion of copying and pasting wbengine was not done as I am severely anxious.
Can anyone assist? Should I try the wbengine patch or try other lines of investigation? Thanks in advance.

If I do a System Image it works correctly.

How do you know it works correctly?

Have you restored the image and confirmed that your PC operates properly after the restoration?

Are you committed to Windows own backup tools for some reason?

If not, I'd suggest other applications that may not have the problems you are now experiencing.

Hello ignatzatsonic,
I appreciate your reply. As you so adroitly pointed out, I do not know if it was indeed successful. Thanks for actually making that point to me!
First I will say that it was working and now isn't. This change in functionality has me concerned. I have had several niggling little issues, that I am attempting to knock of each inconsistency at a time, until all are done.
I must say that I have used it previously on XP and it worked o.k. I am not necessarily committed to its use so much as it's apparent failure to work, now on my new operating system.
Thanks for reiterating the important points and also for your time.

Good Morning (so far) from here, to you all
Just a quick update since my last post. It was considered that the wbengine.reg file was corrupted. A hyper link that was given by Anak showed how to replace it.
Following the instructions to the letter, this method for me proved unsuccessful.
Nice attempt Anak !!

I to have had issues with functionality, but I think you have reached a point where you should seriously consider a repair re-install.

Yes, I know it is a pain, and will take a few hours to accomplish, but if you prepare properly it will give you the peace of mind to know that your OS is functional, and solid.

The only solution for peace of mind, was a complete clean reinstall. Anak, thanks for your time and assistance. I've got to know when to cut my losses and start over.
Still in the process, but none of the problems except drive assignments have occurred obviously yet. Take care Sir!

Thanks Steve for the link,
My problem was slightly different. Initially I installed on a single drive. Everything was fine. Later I installed a backup disk and disk management showed the 2nd drive as Disk 0 and put a 200 MB partition on it. My C: drive now became Disk 1, even though they are cabled correctly. This reinstall I decided to leave both drives. This time even though I followed the installation prompts and I believe did it correctly. My F: drive became disk 0 and was the system disk, while my C: drive became disk 1 and had the partition. Had to redue with only the C: drive in to get it to install the system on it.
Put in E: drive and it copied all the initial folders on C: to E:?? Well anyway things will be what they will be. Take care.

Steve,
Thanks maybe I will. Everything looks right in Explorer so it isn't a real problem. Just what I would call an inconsistency. Right now I am enjoying W7 for the first time since I built the machine. It has no (fingers crossed) issues and if Windows Backup is (now I'm getting some differences of opinion on it's reliability) reliable. Should anything happen I can get back to running without a problem. So I as happy as pigs in slop.
I'll get feisty about it eventually but not for a while. I appreciate the thought and your help.

Your welcome, Glenn

I did the "required" recovery and back-up disks when we first aquired this PC, but after I got rid of the crapware I have gone on to make two more complete back-ups and images with macrium, no sense putting that stuff back on if I don't have to.

Yea, settle in with 7 go back over your posts you never know something in there may jog your memrory.

Before you get too feisty search for what your about to do, and add win 7 ultimate to the search query. That's what I did when I searched for assignment problems, and that's when I saw the link with the SATA CD/DVD drives

I tried it with your amd processor and there didn't seem to be much relation to your situation. What I found there was concerns about overheating.

Try searching all your hardware with your OS added. You just might be able to shake something out of the tree.

Howdy Steve,
Another none user. Hmmmmmm. About the overheating, for me using PC Wizard, all the temps look good to low:). As to the hardware they are WD drives, Lite-On DVD, thats about it. I wrote Gigabyte about it to see if they could explain and they haven't responded.
BTW I have put the MY System Specs in so you'all can see what I'm running and possibly know of any inconsistencies.
Being behind the curve or slow or just missing something, but I have devices that if you block the internet they fail. The hard drives, the DVD Drive. What is causing that?
It seems IMDO that if you take the computer off the internet, these devices may stop functioning. When you go into properties of the driver, only driver description is assessable, update, rollback, uninstall are all greyed out. This is new and surprising to
me if it is true.
Is it me or is that the way it is supposed to work?????

This may seem a little off the wall, but paste this into your search box _ ActiveSync _ See if you get any results.

There is more on it here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/help/synchronize/activesync-usb.mspx
I'm wondering if I have it so I checked my system to see, and I do, but no conflicts.

If you do, then click on View sync results Then View sync conflicts, From there if you do you can resolve them there.

If you’ve combined your hard drives in a RAID, make sure you have installed RAID-compatible drivers.
Check the pin settings on your HDD's.

Check all your connections in/outside the box.

Check Device Manager again for any conflicts.

Howdy Steve,
Had a fun night last night. My friend who just got his + Certification and is angry at me for listening to people on this forum as he put it, are either 16 year olds or unqualified. Last night he was over and we had a donnybrook, about his demeaning attitude of me and my disrespectful attitude toward him for deviating from the exact same software he uses as he lives and breathes computers 24 hours a day and is certified as of two weeks ago and has built 15 systems for people. he told me that Windows Backup is the best most reliable software and has moved it and rescued a system or two using it and the repair disk. It was fun, although I don't think he enjoyed as much as I did. So thanks a lot:rolleyes:.
That was interesting because I never heard of active synchronization before. When I used Zonealarm as my first firewall I lost the usb, and the SATA hard drive. When I looked in their drivers section all options were greyed out except the Display Driver. I google problem Zonealarm and Windows 7. I got many hits describing the same problem, ZA was closing a now necessary port, and I don't have the experience or knowledge to go in and make rules and exceptions for it to work so I did uninstall and Advanced System Care to clean it up. It did not clean it up and several other programs that were incompatible were removed the same way. So I followed the forums advice to do a clean install. After saving a known minimum working system to System Image with backup (which now began working again perfectly) I installed drivers from a disk to load my printer and scanner. Well it didn't like the scanner install and gave me the error to connect to the SATA DVD drive. I did a restore point prior to that software installation and it came back up without the software and the drive was now working properly. Unfortunately some functionality of picking options with the mouse popped up. So I went back to the System Image and started reinstalling the stuff again. This time I only loaded the Scanner driver and none of the extra software Arcsoft bundle. Ran like a champ and still is. Having no experience past XP Pro, prior to the SATA interface I never thought that if I turned the devices on a let Device Manager install new device, that it supposedly would have downloaded the drivers without me needing the driver disks for both devices. Is that true?
Thanks again for the time you give me freely, to assist me to get running. I appreciate it.
So is it possible that because the USB and hardrives are actively synchronized that is why they failed to initialize properly without internet access? Take care.

As a follow up I currently show no synch errors in view of ActiveSync. And no I am not running RAID of any kind. So I guess I'm good to go. If you would indulge me, where did you find the Version of your active synchronization software?

Steve,
Searching Windows 7 help from startup menu for ActiveSync, it stated that my version of Windows does not have ActiveSync, seemingly IMO inferring only mobile devices have it. Although a display came up saying no synch errors????

I searched for it first, but it's also in my _ Control Panel _ .

I don't think it's necessary unless you have a smart-phone to hook up to your PC. Its probably just an extra on mine, but I do run my camera through one of my 6USB ports.

This time I only loaded the Scanner driver and none of the extra software Arcsoft bundle. Ran like a champ and still is.
I had arcsoft years ago, and never liked it. Very limited functionality. It's like lexmark, fairly good printers, but bloatware.
Having no experience past XP Pro, prior to the SATA interface I never thought that if I turned the devices on a let Device Manager install new device, that it supposedly would have downloaded the drivers without me needing the driver disks for both devices. Is that true?
Yes. I believe, but don't quote me I'm not +certified.
Windows98 to present started adding drivers to its OS to help users install devices.

It is always advisable though to use the devices install disk, and then go to the web site to upgrade.

I have done it both ways....I've let the OS install or I've used the device install disk, but I've always checked for any upgrades to the software.
Thanks again for the time you give me freely, to assist me to get running. I appreciate it.
Your welcome.

So is it possible that because the USB and hardrives are actively synchronized that is why they failed to initialize properly without internet access?
Do you mean are or are not???
It's quite possible. Ever since USB came out its been well documented 'bout conflicts.

Take care.
Not so fast. Let's get to the good part.

Your “friend” who is wise and experienced beyond his/her years shows up and gives you a load of crap, but doesn't offer to help you outta this jam, what's up with that?

As I said earlier, I'm not certified, but there are members of this forum who are, and there are members as young as 13. See: http://www.sevenforums.com/chillout-room/96884-how-old-you.html

I'm in the 31, and several months group......336 to be exact, and your “friend” could not hold a candle to any of the 89,231 members here including you.

No wonder members put a “I am not responsible” caveat under their sigs, maybe I should to.

I gotta get goin', ketch ya ina few days...................

Hello Steve,
I do have camera dowload software on the system. So that must be the reason, thanks for the info. Thanks for the way to find out my version. I also don't require the arcsoft stuff. What is strange is that on the machine previous to this last and necessary clean re-install, I put it on and it did not conflict with my SATA DVD drive and cause it to fail.
When I originally loaded the OS I put Zonealarm on it. Research showed that this firewall blocks the OS from connecting to the internet. At that time the only drive I had was my 500 GB WD SATA. It and the usb would not stop from failing. I removed Zonealarm and they both immediately came up perfectly. I do not have the knowledge to track down the port and set up rules to allow it, so I just dumped it for Free Comodo. Now McAfee doesn't conflict and everything comes up fine.

Not so fast. Let's get to the good part.

Well it was a lively dinner and continued afterwards. He told me that his disrespectful and demeaning last messages to me, he didn't realize that he was doing it. He said that he felt "insulted" that I wouldn't follow his recommendations to the letter. As he put it I have built 12 machines and installed them and unfortunately for me, never had a single problem. He forgets that when we built the computer he told me not to put power to the extra for him port on the board. I returned it and got another and put the new one in and had the same symptoms.
When I called the board manufacturer, and described the symptoms the first thing he asked me was if that port was plugged into the power supply. I did, it immediately booted. So he became angry and instead of expressing it to me before he couldn't control himself and remain civil, he became obnoxious. So I joined this forum as I won't put up with someone's feces. This forum is the one that told me to reinstall which cured all the issues I previously had. For me Revo uninstaller and Advanced system Care purchased does not remove enough. So I went back to a prior to the scanner install and it removed all visible signs of it but still caused unusual problems like not letting me do a multiple ctrl/click. So the System Image with the basics on it that he did advise to save, I redid it it cleaned up all traces and I just installed the drivers from the disk and it connected to Epson and asked to trust them and download the latest driver. We continued the discussion by email and I told him why does everyone who disagrees with him have to be a 16 year old or unqualified to oppose his choice. I told him it I take some advice and not others, like I do with him. I told him that the probability that of all the people on this forum, that none of them were qualified more than him who got his + certification about two or three weeks ago, was delusional as he does not know the qualifications of any of your members, that it was egotistical and thus feces and that it was statistically impossible. He quit using that argument.
He felt disrespected so I can understand his rancor as he had been helping me before, like putting in the motherboard and cables but that he should have said something before getting pissed. He said it was his character. I said I like you, admire many of your qualities, admit your greater knowledge of current technology but I would decide what I do, and I would never let it get so bad as to disrespect verbally in writing. I said that helping me should be done with joy or don't do it, that is how I treat him. Our relationship is worth more than you helping me get this computer running. I would have eventually without him and did. I did not need his help if it came with any amount of his feces. So help me if you want and don't help me if you don't. That is the way I do you. So he decided that could not control himself and was thus unwilling to help me any further, or to offer any suggestions or attempt to sway my judgement (which I follow 90% of) because of this. I said that is a smart idea. I went to Computer technician school for 3 years five days a week and came out the second highest grade. As work, I built and troubleshot computer driven machinery. Giant sewing machines for making mattress stitching, fix the CNC machines. I have personally built over 300 computers and installed operating systems starting with DOS 5 up to Windows 2000. I have installed operating systems and got them running before microsoft even existed up to XP Pro. He said that this was like him knowing some of windows 7 and me fixing Model T cars and blackpowder guns. I told him he was an unrealistic, self centerd fool and possibly required medicines to control himself. We decided to use the word Alfalfa as an I am done, you are pissing me off and I don't want to go further, and the other would immediately stop any further discussion and drop it totally. This morning he called alfalfa. I hope he can get over it because I like him a lot, up to the rabid dog change of personality. That about covers it.
Thanks for the shoulder and the information.

glennc,

Is your system currently working correctly?

After seeing all of the long diatribes, I thought I would jump to the end and see if there were still any problems to be fixed.
