Hello jwt, welcome to Seven Forums.

Have you tried a Vista driver in http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/316-compatibility-mode.html?ltr=C?

HP Deskjet 6122 Printer series- Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center

This is a old forum, but i suppose better then clogging up the place with a new thread with the same question.

I also have a Deskjet 6122. At first i tried the installation disk, surprise surprise it didn't work.

I allowed windows update to find it, this never happened and printer still not working.

I've used the 990C work around by thats done nothing at all.

So..... What is the alternative?

Thanks
Dan

I am in the same situation with a 6122 printer. Has anyone been successful in use a 690 driver? At least VISTA was able to use my printer. Is Windows 7 the bad guy or is it HP?

Hello TonyLangton, welcome to Seven Forums!

We can't in all honesty blame MS for there not being a driver for an HP printer, now can we?

Try this:

  • Disconnect the printer
  • Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features, search and uninstall all HP Deskjet related applications, if any found
  • Click Start
  • Click Devices and Printers on the right pane
  • Click Add a printer
  • Click Add a local printer
  • Choose LPT1: (Printer Port), click Next
  • Choose HP from left pane, HP Deskjet 990c from the right pane
  • Follow the instructions on your screen. Do not connect the printer to computer before told to do so
It should work now. Good luck.

Kari,

Thanks for the suggestion but it does not seem to do the trick. It shows the 990c as installed but it will not print a test page or print from a program. I was not prompted as to when to connect the printer. After the wizard went though the steps it asked if I wanted to print a test page. I clicked that but the printer was not connected so nother happenned. Then I connected the printer and it said a document was in queue so I deleted that and tried again and still nothing. I went thorugh the entire sequence again and still the same result. I even uninstalled my HP scanjet. I wonder if there are other files loaded that uninstall will not remove?

I really appreciate the efforts. This seems to be an issue that HP should work to offer a solution. I am very disgusted with their tech support and customer service. If I have to buy another printer it will not be an HP unless they step up to address this issue.

Success! After trying a number of options the part that I was missing was to change the print port to USB. The following is what I applied that seems to be working:

Step two: Install the driver
Install the compatible print driver on the computer.
  1. Make sure that the USB cable is not connected to the HP product.
  2. From the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon ( ), type control printers in the Start Search box, and then press Enter . The Printers window appears.
  3. Click Add a printer and then click Add a local printer .
  4. Click the Use an existing port check box.
  5. In the Use an existing port drop-down list, select LPT1: (Printer Port) and then click Next .
  6. Under Manufacturer on the Install the printer driver dialog box, select HP .
  7. Under Printers , select the appropriate alternate print driver for the HP product and then click Next .
  8. In the Printer name text box, type the HP product name and then click Next . The print driver starts to install.

NOTE:
The name of the alternate print driver appears as the default name. The name can be changed to the name of the HP product, if desired.

  1. After a message appears on the computer that the product was added successfully, connect the USB cable to the product and to the computer.
  2. On the Found New Hardware screen, click Cancel .

NOTE:
If multiple pop-up windows appear, click Cancel on each window.

Step three: Configure the driver
Configure the installed print driver.
  1. In the Printers window, right-click the name of the HP product and then click Properties . The Properties dialog box appears.
  2. Click the Ports tab.
  3. Change the port from LPT1 to USB or DOT4 , as indicated in the following table.

NOTE:
If there is more than one USB/DOT4 port available, choose the USB/DOT4 port with the highest port number, because this port is usually assigned to the last connected and detected USB print device. To adjust the width of the ports row in the Properties dialog box to see the full port name, put the cursor over the vertical line between Port and Description , click and hold the mouse button, and then move the mouse to the right until the port name is visible.

Hope this may help someone else!

Tony

This is a fairly simple solution, and stupidly enough HP didnt tell the world about it.

Although the site reads 990c driver as the alternative, this is not the case. I have the 6122 and windows 7 ultimate but like you I do not have 990c in my find printer options.

Control Panel > Hardware and devices > Add a printer > HP >
Simply select HP Deskjet 460 or 460c model drivers and it will work.

Apparently the 4 and 6 series have similar driver structures and your printer will work. I have this printer and tested this and I can guarantee you 100% that this works.

Hopefully this was helpful.

Did you let Windows update find the driver, or did you turn this feature off?

Good Call Dude.

Did you let Windows update find the driver, or did you turn this feature off?

I did this before running any Windows updates. I figured the 990c should be stock without but updates in the system but apparently it wasnt so I just went with the 460 series and it worked :)

Does anyone know how to get an HP Deskjet 6122 with two-sided printing attachement to work?

My HP Deskjet 6122 has a two sided print attachement which came with it when it was new. It worked fine with Win95, fine with Win98, fine with WinXP SP1 and fine with WinXP SP2. Now I come to use it with Win7 on my brand new PC and it will only do one-sided printing.

I installed the alternative driver. My version of Win7 Ultimate 32bit (version 6.1 build 7600) did not include in its list of HP printer drivers, on the right hand pane, a 990c or a 460c but it did show a 460.

I installed the 460 in accordance with the above guidelines and it prints OK to one side. However, I can not select for "two sided printing." I can only select for "two sided (manual) printing."

With the manual 2 sided printing it just prints every other page and then pops a window up telling you to turn the printed stack upside down and click OK - whereupon it prints the other sides. Not nearly as good as just telling it to print both sides and letting it just get on and do the whole lot.

Can anyone help here, or is this perfectly good printer now a waste of carbon?
