Solved Window cannot be resized nor moved.

I have a window that is stuck at a certain, small size in the upper left corner of my display. It is for one application (Epson V700 scanner).

I can't use the windows key with arrows to move it. There is no option for move or maximize.

Sometimes the window is not visible when starting the application and I have to play with resolution and cascade to even see as much as described above.

The window cannot be stretched bigger.

I can close it.

I even totally uninstalled the Epson scanner software and reinstalled it. Still, at startup, the same issue. Another compute with the same software and hooked to the scanner works without issue.

I would really like to use this software on this computer, but don't know of any way to deal with this. Help is appreciated. Thank you.

I'm not sure why the window shows on one computer and not the other, but it looks like a window that is supposed to be hidden. There are dozens of windows that are supposed to stay hidden - like those for tray icons in the notification area See if the window goes away if you close (not just hide) the tray icon for the scanner (assuming that there is a tray icon for the scanner).

If that makes the window go away, then we know a bit more about what is making it appear.

Can you provide a link to the scanner software that you are installing? Or maybe the names of the programs.

You should try this method, it usually works:

• Use ALT+TAB to switch to the off-screen application.
• Press ALT-SPACE to bring up the system menu (you won't see it because it is off screen)
• Press R to select the "Restore" menu choice to ensure the windows isn't is maximized (you can not move it if it is maximized)
• Press ALT-SPACE again, then M to select the "Move" menu choice.
• Press one of the arrow keys to initiate the movement.
• Now just use the mouse to place the window where you want.

Thanks for your response. One mistake in my first post was saying it was a Epson V700. It is actually a Epson Perfection V500 Photo.

It sounds to me like you are probably correct. Out of frustration with the application not properly launching its normal startup window, I must be forcing this window to show up by playing with the screen resolution etc... It does appear to be a 'tray icon window' based on what you are saying. It does go away when I close the tray icon.

The program was Epson Scan.v. 3.74US based on the version number I see on that other computer where it works. When launching it on that computer, a splash screen window appears for a second with the version number. Then the main Espon Scan window appears.

The software was on a CD or DVD. Both computers appear to were running the same process. And if looking at the properties of the process, it appeared to be the same version of the process file.

On the computer where it is not working, after launch, if I click on the system tray icon, I see 'Epson' kind of flash and move from the system tray icon to the windows start button. If I click again on that, it does not repeat. That sort of makes me think the main window is 'off screen' when initially started, but I could be totally wrong about that.

I looked for a later version of Epson Scan for this scanner on line, and found one. I also installed it, and tried it with the same result. Information on that download is below.

You should try this method, it usually works:

Thank you for the suggestions and clear instructions. Restore and Move just don't work though. I think UsernameIssues response is helping.

3. Launch the application using the *edited shortcut*. The application will launch maximized.

4. Right click in the taskbar and choose "Cascade Windows."

You can now return to step 2 and choose "Normal."

This is a not uncommon problem in Outlook. The solution sounds really silly, but it does work.

I installed the software into a virtual machine and I got a what I expected - this error:

Notice that your screenshot shows the little scanner icon to the left of the word EPSON - so I think that your window happens a bit further into the application launch. But I can now play with the error window that I have and show you how you might be able to move and re-size your window. Maybe there is some useful info in that window or maybe it will be blank. :-(

I changed the window that you see above into this...

...by using one line of AutoIt3 code.

Then I made it bigger than normal...

...with this line of code: WinMove("EPSON Scan", "", 0, 0, 600, 345)

If you want to try and expand your window, then:
...save that line of code into a new text file on your desktop
...rename the file test.au3 (unhide file extensions - if need be)
...install AutoIt3* (you can uninstall it once we are thru playing)
...make the problem window appear
...double click on the au3 file that you just made


*Feel free to upload the AutoIt3 installer to virustotal before you install it. Here is a link to a virustotal scan that I did before making this post.

THANK YOU!! That brought a tear to my eye. That one small window stayed, but the script popped up the window I needed, albeit at the size shown. I then clicked on the drop down menu upper right and it resized it correctly according to the option selected. I closed the application and reopened it, and the problem is gone (working like it is supposed to, without that other stuck window).

I purchased a USB switch so that we could use this scanner at either computer, and it was a drag that I would have to move 5 feet to this other computer and use it, login and and traverse network to get scans where I want them to wind up. It had worked fine many, many times, but then this showed up. I am glad I turned to the forum for help.

Thank you, but I don't have a 'Maximized' option. UsernameIssues solved though with a recommendtion to use a scripting tool.

If there are two windows with the same title, then the script will act on the most recently activated window (a thing called "z order"). So it makes sense what you saw.

If you have repetitive tasks or you just want more control over how things act on your computer, then a scripting tool like AutoIt or AutoHotKey might be a good solution for you.
