If you are using Microsoft Security Essentials, it was turned off by default and should not be turned on. It is not needed, its function was taken over by MSE.

I had this problem yesterday, It was cause by msa.exe (a malware disguised as an antivirus). You will need to start the Group Policy Editor. Click on administrative Templates and then Windows Components In Windows Components click on Windows Defender disable "Turn off Windows Defender". It worked for me, I hope it does for you.

P.S: to start the Group Policy Editor, click on start and in the Search Box type group and then click on "Edit Group Policy"

I cannot find anything about when MSE is on that it turns Defender off. Where is the info on this?

Essentials uses the engine of Defender. Ill see if I can find something, but it is definately turned off.

When I was using MSE, I went ahead and disabled Windows Defender in the "Services".

Use that and malwarebytes for scans and you are good. Dont forget the firewall.

I'm using malwarebytes and Zone Alarm Pro but wasn't sure if MSE antivirus was good enough. I have Avira (free ed.) that I was using on Xp but was not sure which one to use now. I'm real new to Win7 - like to keep things as simple as possible but want excellent protection.

Hi, rtmeek.

IMO, the real-time protection provided by MSE is more robust than that of Windows Defender, due largely to the difference in definitions. During the installation of MSE, it would have deactivated Windows Defender to avoid conflicts.

If you have not done it yet, even if you are behind a router, I recommend turning on the Windows 7 Firewall.

I also like Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware as a secondary scanner.
