Time to start scrutinizing your patches/updates even more closely.....

Microsoft made good Monday on its promise to give Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users a shove toward Windows 10.

The shove arrived in the form of Windows 10's shift from an "optional" upgrade to a "recommended" upgrade.

Anyone who has disabled automatic upgrades using Group Policy settings or the registry edit will not have Windows 10 automatically pushed to them.

Well ......... I DO kinda like 10 but this heavyhandedness is really getting out of hand. Seriously considering dropping back to 7 or 8.1 at this point. Lol, Zorin/Unbutu is looking better and better too. And I say this as a MS fanboy too

After seeing kb3112343 and it's status and it's definition I doubt I will be in any rush to download and install any so called Important updates
Most the others only say Remote code execution yada.....

The problem avoiding "Important" updates is that you may be avoiding genuinely important security updates. As this article states the documentation may be insufficient to make a proper assessment.

What do you do?
I plan to keep installing Important updates and hope the worst that can happen is is a Windows 10 update screen that I can ignore. If it's forced on me I'll go back to a W7 system image offline and attempt to remove the offending KBs. Then hope Windows 10 hasn't been permanently activated.

Here's another question. Say there comes a time you want to run Windows 7 permanently offline, does the OS have a "phone home" requirement that needs to be met or else the OS becomes deactivated? I think the answer is no since I built a system for someone who for various reasons has run it offline for over 2 years now.

I have a friend who uses his PC as a word processor. He has never been on-line and also never told me about any problems - except one when he switched from a mouse with the little ball on the bottom to an optical mouse. That did not work on his table which had a very shiny surface. I piece of carton fixed that problem.

I wouldn't worry about that one too much Thrash. Just another monthly Windows update client. As long as you have set your windows update settings correctly and don't install KB2952664 and KB3035583 then it won't do anything. Plus, if I remember correctly, you have GWX control panel installed so I wouldn't be concerned about it.

I wouldn't worry about that one too much Thrash. Just another monthly Windows update client. As long as you have set your windows update settings correctly and don't install KB2952664 and KB3035583 then it won't do anything. Plus, if I remember correctly, you have GWX control panel installed so I wouldn't be concerned about it.

There's nothing to monitor 2 machines will never be upgraded they are not compatible and I'm quite happy with the installs they have win-7 and Linux mate 17.1 at the moment

Anyway, I'm still safe with my Windows 7 Professional as far as I can tell according to GWX Control Panel. Of course, not installing any of the GWX/telemetry/Windows Update Client, etc. updates over the past year has helped too.

Wait until they will upgrade your Linux to W10. Desperate as they are, anything is possible.

Nothing surprises me. I've just heard Microsoft has acquired SwiftKey on Android and iOS so they'll be collecting cloud data off of those phones too now!

Re: keeping Windows offline: I ran W7 offline for many years before finally breaking down and getting the internet. (Actually, my wife bought a laptop when she retired, and I then discovered how valuable it is for my music creation). And before 7, I ran W98 for many years offline. No problems with either.

I'm seeing an update KB3133445 and without further in-depth info, this one isn't going to be downloaded.

I also saw the return of KB2952664 as mentioned above.

So that's another one to watch out for. "Update Client" could be interpreted by different people as the updater for fixes/patches (Update Agent) or an updater for the OS.
