Hey guys,

You can load Windows 2000 on it just fine, but I wasn't able to get any better resolution than 640x480 or 16-bit color when I tried it. I may just go back to Virtual PC 2007 SP1 (which does work on 7, it's just technically "unsupported") to get a better Win2K experience again.

To get a better visual experience wither use VPC 2007 SP1 or VirtualBox....

First off, which one?

You'll need to create a Virtual Machine and set it up for W2K Pro and then go from there.

I haven't used VPC in a long time (and that was for 5 minutes) but I can walk you through VBox if you want to try that.....

Well I'd like to Have 3 virtual machines. Xp, Longhorn, and Windows 2000 Professional.

I already have the Virtual XP setup, and I have the .iso's for Windows 2000 and Longhorn but how would I set them up as virtual machines?

You CAN run Windows 2000 as a Windows 7 Virtual PC client VERY nicely. It will provide networking and high resolution. Here is what you need to do: 1. Install with disk. 2. Install sp4 3. Install rollup 1. 4. Install VPC2004 additions, the new ones don't work. You can also Google how to slipstream sp4 onto an install disk or iso file. This may violate Microsoft license however.

Yeah, Windows 2000 would be a snap on VMware, VirtualBox, or Virtual PC. As for Longhorn, if you're referring to the beta builds of the original Longhorn, that would be tougher due to lack of driver support and it not being exactly XP or Vista but you can certainly try. I've tried in VMware Workstation and have been unable to get the NIC to work so no internet.

Im using 2k SP4 Rollup 2, Windows XP SP3, Windows 98Se, Ubuntu, Fedora on VirtualBox and runs in seamless mode all but 98se since there are no drivers for OS but works with DOS with Soundblaster 16 drivers (Floppy ISO) and Vesa Drivers from S3 (Floppy ISO) and i can run all my old games on XP/2000 and 98SE for DOS games better than DosBox

i'm about to buy a 64 bit windows 7 workstation on which i want to run windows 2000 (because of the CAD applications i don't want to upgrade.)

i'v been told that i have to have the "home" version of windows 2000, not the "oem" disk i legally have for my old (no longer working) computer. but i can't find this "home version" for sale. will the original oem version install ok?

I'm an enigineer, not a computer whiz, so please bear with my ignorant questions.

thanks

They're referring to the retail version of Windows 2000. Legally speaking, you can only use the retail version as the OEM Version is tied to the computer to which it came with however, since it is Windows 2000, there is no product activation or anything else technically stopping you from installing it; and I can definitely understand that finding retail copies of Windows 2000 for sale these days would be rather difficult especially since support for it has died now.

Hi there
just enter the product key when you install Windows 2000 -- no activation is required so it WILL work.

I would tend to use virtual box or vmware player as the VM software rather than Virtual PC but that's another issue.

You should install the latest available updates for Windows 2000 -- you should be able to find some via google.

I think the last official update was SP4 which you can still download. You should install this even on a Virtual machine.

Download details: Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Network Install for IT Professionals

Your CAD package should run on ANY version of Windows 2000 BTW. I run W2000 professional as a Virtual machine but HOME should work too.

Once you've upgraded to SP4 service pack level the differences between the W2000 versions are minimal and there are even tricks wherby you can get W2000 to act as a SERVER allowing 4 simultaneous connections.

This get around was stopped in XP however. Remember that Windows 2000 was essentially designed as a SERVER type OS which is why its nice and fast -- and actually was the basis for the VERY SUCCESSFUL Windows 2003 server product.

Cheers
jimbo
