Hello !

I wanted to see if windows 311 would run on the modern hardware that we use today os i took my copy out of storage and gave it a go. Several years ago we put it onto a cd instead of the floppies it was on.

To make a short story even shorter i could not even get it to start the install. Did not see any ram for one thing. I don't think it can see 1 gig of ram. If i remember correctly ( was a long time ago ) i only had 16 megs which was the largest at the time. It also could not find the hard drives. Just for laughs and giggles i used one of my good machines for this test with 2 500gig and 1 1tb just to see what if anything would happen , i did not expect it to see the drives at all. And it did not surprise me it didn.t.

So then i pulled out a socket A ( 478 ) with athlon something running at 2 gig on a biostar motherboard. Used a 6.5 gig hard drivea and an old sony cd rom , with a hercules video card. And it started to load/install. It did install but was unstable for some reason !!!. This motherboard used the old smaller ram sticks so i only used 2 32 bits ones that were laying in the parts box.

But it did install and i was the proud user of a gloriefied file manager. If anyone remembers it only had folders on the desktop. Usb stuff did not work at all , again no surprise. We sat the monitors side by side with that and the windows 7 version and what a difference. i can't believe i thought that 311 was outstanding. Showed it to a colledge it student and he did not even know what it was , lol.

Anyone have any experience with 311 ?

FWIW. I installed wfwg 3.11 from floppies using a usb floppy drives in my win7 machine.

When I get a new machine, all I do is copy the virtual disk to the new machine in the proper place
and it all works again. my vhd is only 415 megs in size.

Does this bring back memories! The very first computer I ever bought, I believe it was a Packard Bell, had Windows 3.11 installed on it.

Some machines have an OS Install mode where it limits the ram that is used by the OS to 256mb. I used that on a 7 year old dell to put Windows 95 on it (but I didn't keep it as there were no drivers for that machine on Windows 95, plus XP is better)
