Solved windows 7 32 0R 64

hello i am new to the forums and have a question... i have a dell Inspiron 1520 laptop has 4gigs of ram Intel Pentium T2330 dual core @ 1.60GHz Merom 65nm Technology with a brand new Western Digital WDC WD3200BEVT 320gig hard drive.. right now i have windows 7 sp1 32bit .. my laptop can handle 64bit would i notice a big difference in system speed and response going to 64bit, or better to stick with 32bit for my laptop....

Not at 4 gigs ram. since 64bit uses more resources (but is slightly faster) it may well be a wash.

64bit would be somewhat faster but it would take more HD space, use more resources, and be harder to find drivers for.


BTW I am using a 1520 now.

I would say finding 64bit drivers for Windows 7 at this point would only be correct for really old or really niche/odd hardware. Getting drivers certified for WHQL on Win7 requires both 32 and 64bit drivers, so unless you're talking about old or niche hardware, that shouldn't be true.

The rest is true though, and given the question about whether or not x64 would give a big boost over x86, your statement is true that there wouldn't be a huge performance delta on that hardware at all as RAM wouldn't be the limiting/differentiating factor.

64bit would be better.....

gone are the days when you couldn't find drivers for 64bit operating systems. I have win 7 64bit and a lot of cameras and other hardware ( friend's relative's) get connected to my laptop and During two years of its use I never had even a single issue with drivers.IT just works.

i ended up switch to 64bit.. all my drivers were found for 64bit..

I would do it for the simple fact that it would allow you to use all of your memory.

x64 doesn't use very much more resources. I don't think it is a wash as long as your system supports memory remapping so that you can utilize all of your 4 GB of memory. If it doesn't, then there isn't a good reason to move to x64.

I see that mentioned a lot, but I have yet to come across an OEM or homebrew system that I've had to edit a BIOS setting to allow all 4 GB to be used. I'm not saying it doesn't exist...just that it doesn't seem to be as prevalent an issue as some make it seem.

Agreed. It's almost always the PCI Express controller or PCI-E cards taking a reservation, or a reservation for the video card or allocations for an onboard video chipset. It's pretty rare nowadays to have to make any changes to get more memory, although it is probably still somewhat true on older hardware.
