Windows 7: 32-bit vs 64-bit

my specs are:

OS: Windows 7 Professional SP1 32bit
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 @1.86 GHz
Motherboard: Asus P5LP-LE (Socket LGA 775)
Memory: 3 GB DDR2 Dual Channel PC2-5300 (2x512 MB + 2x1024 MB)
Graphics Card: PNY GeForce GTS 450 XLR8 (1 GB GDDR5)
PSU: NILOX 600W
Hard Drives: Western Digital SATA 313 GB

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 supports 64-bit elaboration.

if I replace Windows 7 32-bit with the 64-bit version, will I get a performance increase?

Well, a 64bit CPU will run native 64bit Windows code somewhat faster than a 32bit CPU (whether that's a 64bit CPU in legacy 32bit mode with a 32bit OS or a 32bit CPU) will run native 32bit Windows code. However, the rest is true - you won't have faster access to devices or memory; just a CPU that runs code native for it faster.

I'll try it i think... Every speed boost is important for my pc since i has got an old cpu!

You will probably gain a little bit more free ram. I bet your total usable ram is < 3 gig and moving to x64 will most likely allow you to use your full 3 gig that is installed. And in fact if you wanted to add some ram you could then do that whereas you cannot get any more free ram with x32 in that machine with that 1 gig graphics card.

if you add more ram then possibly yes if you leave with 3gb then probably not and run about the same i believe

One of my old machine at the office running 64-bit with very limited RAM (2GB). it does most office work. Lower scores in graphic performance don't do bother me at all. Can do some simple works with Photoshop CS5.

I can only use less than 2 GB of ram because 1279 MB are shared with the grapics card!!

can i set less shared memory?

2303 MB for grapics are really too much for my pc...

Well the graphics card would start at 4 gig and move downward. So it should look like this:

So really you should be losing just 300 meg of your 3 gig for the video card and a little more for other hardware. Leaving a total of 2600MB for windows or so I would guess.

With windows x64 and a compatible motherboard it would look more like this:

Leaving your full 3 gig usable and allowing space for you to upgrade to 4, 8, 12, 16 or ???
