Hi,

So I just bought a new computer yesterday and set it up. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate and started to install some Windows Updates and drivers. I encountered a BSOD after a few minutes only but I decided not to take further action because it did not happen anymore.

Today, I started to install my usual programs and games and played a movie while doing so and started experiencing many BSODs. I have tried uninstalling the Catalyst program and reinstalled the drivers for my video card only without the Catalyst program, but the bluescreens still happen.

It does not happen if I do not turn on the movie or do anything else, which makes me suspect that it might be something to do with the video card.

My PC specs are here:

i7-930 2.8GHZ LGA-1366
Gigabyte X58A-UD3R Motherboard
OCZ DDR3-2000 6GB Ram
WD Raptor 150GB/16M (for my c: drive)
WD 1TB/64M Caviar Green (for my d: drive)
XFX RADEON HD5850 755M 1GB
Andyson F600M Modular Power Supply

I have attached all the dump files and would be glad and thankful if you guys can help me.

But my computer is only one day old and all my parts are 100% new. Are there any ideas as to why such hardware errors could still occur?

Ok I have just downloaded SpeedFan but I have no idea what temperature means it is overheating. Most of the temperatures seem to say around the 50-60 range. I'll post a screenshot.

Hi fidelitas7,

I have the same mobo and i7 930 chip as you. I was getting 0x124 error codes on a BSOD while playing a particular game.

What is your BIOS version? It should be something between F1 and F5. (I had F1 and flashed it to F5 using the Gigabyte QFlash method.)

I'll look at your dump file when I get home and see if I see any similarities.

Hi fidelitas7,

First off, I'm not a debugging guru like the majority of the other folks that respond to these thread. I was intrigued because your specs for mobo and CPU are the same as mine, and I'm trying to learn more about the whole debug area.

I looked at the mini-dumps that you provided, but did not see any consistency in the PROCESS_NAME field entry. In my case, it was always PnkBstrB.exe. For you, it listed:
  • firefox.exe
  • system
  • mpc-he.exe
  • installer.exe
  • sidebar.exe
I'm not sure if this helps you out. There are several good posts in this thread and others on general troubleshooting that you can do.

I would check that your BIOS is at least at the F4 level, as that is needed for proper support of the i7 930 CPU. See this link to the Gigabyte website for the supported CPU table for the GA-X58A-UD3R motherboard. I used the Qflash to update mine to the F5 version. Just make sure that you know all of your BIOS settings as you need to select Load Optimized Defaults after flashing, which will reset everything.

solve windows 7 instabilities

Hi,
I've been struggling myself for some while to get rid of regularly annoying crashes (0x00000124); things seem to be pointing at the video part (driver/card). In my case that's a Radeon HD 4550.

I recently put myself to it and found a solution: in BIOS, disable the power consumption reducing options. In my case, having an AMD processor, that meant disabling both C1E and Cool 'n' Quiet. (I understood that for Intel processors have C1E and EIST).

If one of these option were enabled I still had issues; switching them off both solved my case.
What I've read somewhere is that Cool 'n' Quiet adjusts the multiplier and vcore based on CPU load; C1E lowers multiplier and vcore when idle.

Without actually knowing it, my understanding is that the video card (or it's driver) can't deal with the continuous changing multiplier and vcore.
