Windows 7 64 bit crashes when using mouse

I have a computer HP Desktop Pavilion type that is < 1 year old. Over the last 6 weeks I am experiencing the system crashing when I am using the mouse. Sometimes I am in Word or Exel and sometimes on the internet. It happens about once a day. The system then fires up again.

I changed the USB port for the mouse but it did not make any difference.

I am wondering whether Windows updates is causing this problem?

Welcome to the forums!

Have you tried uninstalling the driver for the mouse and then reinstalling it? You could also try the same with your usb drivers.

No I have not tried that as yet. I am using the original mouse that came with the computer. I have had the computer for 10 months and this problem just appeared 6 weeks ago. Now what are the steps for uninstalling the mouse driver and reinstalling. I did switch USB ports and it did not help.

Is this the original factory preinstall from HP with all of the bloatware and duplicate utilities that have better versions built into Win7? If so this is a corrupt install which most tech enthusiasts will not run, instead choosing to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 to enjoy Win7 in its native state.

At the minimum I'd Clean Up Factory Bloatware.

To try to troubleshoot your issue which is likely caused by the corrupt install, you can also try Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

The HP computer comes with a partition on the hard drive that has the operating system on it. It was working fine for ~ 8 months so this problem just came up recently.

Angus -

It might have been working for 8 months but it is still the worst possible install of Win7 one can have. The HP factory preinstall is loaded with more bloatware and useless duplicate utilities that have better versions built into Win7. It is a corrupt install from the day its turned on and only gets worse until you Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

You may have never known what it is like to run native Win7, a featherlight, instantaneous OS that never hangs or bogs unless it is ruined by all the preinstalled crapware.

So look over the steps for reinstall and ask back any questions you have. We will help you get a perfect reinstall so issues like this are a thing of the past.

Otherwise work through the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 and at least Clean Up Factory Bloatware to given Win7 a fighting chance to perform like it wants.http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219576-clean-up-factory-bloatware.html

Just go to device manager, find your mouse, right click and choose uninstall. Reboot and let Windows do it for you would be the simplest way.

You ought to give SERIOUS thought to Gregrockers advice though. A clean install as he suggests will make your head spin at the difference.

To reboot without the mouse once you Uninstall its driver in Device Manager, program your Start button first to Shut Down in Power Options. Then press Power Button once.

Thanks for advice: I will try that. I am wondering what a clean install involves. Does this mean I do not use the operating system on my partition. I am thinking "yes". I should make recovery discs so that I have them. {I clicked on above link to clean install and my Explorer gave me problems and I had to shut the computer down}. So I willl have to uninstall my Windows 7 {from HP} and then do a fresh "clean install" from the Internet. That is what I am thinking you do. Do you lose your files and do I have to reinstall the programs I have on the computer?

I tried to reinstall my mouse drivers at the device manager. Then I shut the computer power down and restarted. I found I my mouse was not working at all...So I shut the power down again, disconnected the mouse. Then I pressed START and connected the mose to the mouse is now working again. So I should be able to check the date of the driver file to ensure it was downloaded today? yes?

Let me study the procedure: with other HP computers I have performed a destructive recovery and reloaded all the original software from the partition. Of course all of my software had to be reloaded. So I need to have a plan for that. It was not difficult to reload from the partition. The clean installation is presumably an analogous procedure. I will need to supply information to Microsoft before I will be able to do that.

My own data files are backed up with Carbonite.

Thanks: I see your link in one of your messages above. I am going to study this material to see that I understand it completely. Sometime there is jargon or computer terms that I do not understand. First I need to document the software I will have to reinstall. For example right now I do not have at hand the documentation or references on my Windows 7 that came with the computer. Right now I do not know where that is. Additionally I will log all of the information I need for all of my programs for reinstallation. I am going to put the material inot an Excel file on Dropbox so that I can access it from my Laptop.

With earlier computers the "crapware" was huge, but with this one it is minimal.

Newer HP's also have the Minimal Recovery option that is referred to in the tutorial, which is close to a Clean Reinstall. Have you checked to see if it is offered when you run HP System Recovery?

Back up your files first.

Yes; I have checked that out with HP: they told me that system recovery option only applies to Windows 8 computers. Also I spoke with them about making system recovery discs. They said I must use discs and I cannot use a flash drive, however, I do have the discs here {it will take 5 of them }.

As you can see from the link you can most certainly run Factory Recovery on an HP WIn7 PC, so i don't know why HP told you that.

I would reboot into Recovery to see if it offers Minimal Recovery and if so run it. If not do the Clean Reinstall.

Make your Recovery disks first and back up your files.

gregrocker: Thank you for you advice: My impression was that the HP Support level of expertise was not good. I gave them the precise information regarding my computer and that was what they told me. Now regarding your advice above.

The usual procedure for HP recovery is simply to follow the steps given in the computer. {I have done recovery in earlier HP computers i.e. destructive recovery} I had. Now your language above puzzles me i.e. " I would reboot into recovery ........". What exactly in simple language does that mean.....
