Hey all, please can someone help...

Im using Windows 7 64 bit and everything seems to be fine until I install software. Nothing happens straight away ie when im on the windows itself, its when I restart or shutdown that has a quick blue screen an restarts itself.

Installing anything such as Adobe reader, Microsoft office, .. Now on restarting it asks me to start in last known mode (whatever) or startup repair - recommended. So I do the startup repair and during that it asks me to do a system restore in which I do, well... damn! all what I installed previously has gone, and windows is working fine again! though if I install anything it does the same thing again.

Its now had 3 installs of windows over and over again with drivers etc...
I am lost to whats causing this trouble now.

All my software is for 64bit! if you ask, yes its up to date.

Please help! thanks.

Welcome,
I have a rather important question, not relating to your post directly. Did you buy the Windows 7 OS, which came with a 32 and 64 bit DVD? If so are you using both at the same time, in different computers. The wording of your post seems to indicate that may be the situation.

I would check you RAM with Memtest86+.
This sounds like a hardware problem.

Its brand new! and its doing this same thing on TWO computers, my older 1 and
the new one I only bought this week! ... so you see, its impossible its the RAM!
as its doing this exact same thing on both my computers :(

Edit: the RAM is Kingston 6gb DDR3 FYI. And windows 32bit works fine on
both the systems! the only reason im wanting to use the NEW 64bit is because ive
more RAM and want to use it.

Where did you mention before that it occured on two computers?

Any way, before it blue screens, type advanced system settings in the start search box.
Hit enter.
Then go to Startup and recovery and select settings.
Uncheck Automatically Restart under System failures.
This will let you see the blue screen and maybe find out what is causing it..

ahh... did you update bios... is your board / boards compatible with 64 bit... just because it says it on the box x64... dont mean its compatible straight out the box, also is it a clean install of x64 , not an update of your x86 version... hope this helps..

Could indeed still be memory. Post up the bluescreen bugcheck file to our Crashes and Debugging forum here and they will quickly determine the (driver, memory, HD, etc) cause.
http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/96879-blue-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html

As you discovered 64 bit can be a bit more challenging with drivers, but this is still not a reason to change out drivers given by the installer or quickly updated by optional Windows Updates. This is not XP. MS spent a fortune getting the Win7 drivers into the installer and via Updates. I would not change drivers unless performance dictates it.

Win7 troubleshooting fundamentals

Tips for getting a purrfect http://www.sevenforums.com/installation-setup/125874-re-install-windows-7-a.html#post1086729 - use the ones which apply.

Ok, some points as ive not slept at all yet and ive wrote like a fool! lol...

1: Its one copy of windows with the same activation key as its mine I can use that key on both machines!
(this has nothing to do with my problem though, hehe)

2: Where did I get the software from? ... please, dont ask a stupid question! haha I obviously got it from the
install disk via the manufacturer.

3: The RAM! to make sure as many of you are saying so, ive just checked it and result was good!

4: The motherboard is brand new ASUS M4A77T SI and ive just checked for a recent BIOS update and its up to date.

@pbcopter ... funny thing now, since ive done the startup repair its not doing it! also since ive done as you said and turned off automatic restart! now I could be wrong, it may do it soon so ill keep you posted but its looking good just now. Weird

@gregrocker its not the blue screen of death mate as its a quick flash then restart! and fixed...

Thank you everyone for your answers.

You can only use your Product Key on one machine at a time.

If RAM is to be tested, it should be done for 5-6 passes or overnight using memtest86.

Check your logs for errors at the time you had the problem, and for repeat errors to google to find their cause and resolution. A crash as you describe should be logged and possibly have a bugcheck file.

Thats not a stupid question I have had bad copy's before just like bad movies, so there you go, you install a bad copy of windows and it's has a slight defect say in the drivers section of the install you'll get bsod's..

and the error log in which I got on restart-up. Hopefully now this can shed some answers
on what is causing it, lol... thanks
