My machine boots to desktop but nothing will open or work. Start button, volume, firefox, task manager, etc. It does this in safe mode as well. It's not frozen as the screensaver will come on and I can move the mouse, I just can't open anything even with keystrokes. I can't restore or run any diagnostics. What can I do?

Did it always do this?

Where did you get the win 7 dvd from? Was it downloaded or purchased?

What is mentioned in event viewer around the time that happens?

There are several ways to find what the problem is. The best is to go into event viewer (type eventvwr in search). Go to the windows log>application tab.

You want to look for critical errors (they have red in the left column ).

When you find them you want to look for critical errors that say app hang, app crash, or anything that relates to the problem.

When you find them please note the event ID, and the source codes and tell us what they are.

The problem is I cannot even use the search function to get to the event viewer. Everything is non functional. Search will not open. Once the desktop is up, there is 0 functionality of everything with mouse clicks or keystrokes.

Can you boot into safe mode (F8)?

Yes, kb and mouse work in bios. I'm thinking a virus maybe? I don;t know what to do but buy another hard drive and try to salvage the files from the current. Any other ideas?
