Windows 7 80080005 update error

Hello,

I have an older laptop that I'd like to gift to some teenagers and I'm trying to get it to the point of hand off without wiping the drive; that way it still has Office, etc.

Unfortunately, I think it crashed during an update a couple of years ago. This seems to have generated the 80080005 update error, which means that it won't take updates. I'm trying to figure out if I can somehow repair the existing Windows 7 install.

I've done quite a lot of grunt work to figure this out including:
Running various repairs from a Windows upgrade CD -- useless

Finally getting a modified version of sfc /scannow to work with a Windows CD in the drive. It really didn't want to start the repair service. The upshot was that everything was fine even though clearly it is a liar.

Scanned the drive for errors -- none found.

Ran CC Cleaner and another application to try and clean up the registry

Exhaustively checked for viruses, etc. I was able to catch one trojan, though I don't know if that contributed to the original problem.

Uninstalled all manner of useless applications.

Deleted various festive files like pending.xml.

Reset my netsock for Christmas, reset all those upgrade .dll files that take forever to input.

Attempted to 'upgrade' to an older version of Windows 7. The machine refused on political grounds.

Currently it is the other room trying to do an install of Windows 7 using online updates. I think it has been looking for updates for about 3 hours.

I'm thinking about getting a disk image of Windows 7 SP1 and using that to do an install from a separate hard drive partition. I assume that will likely go awry.

All of that said....does anyone want to help me figure out what the heck is really going on? I assume it is a couple of corrupted system files.

I have a CBS file, though no where to put it.

A couple of selections from the start and end of the file will be forthcoming -- I used a different machine to post this.

Thank you.

Sorry, it may go without saying that I don't seem to have any roll back saved points for this machine.

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)
