Here is the situation:

New custom build from scratch: purchased chassis, cpu, hd, mb, psu, etc seperately. Also purchased an OEM vers of W7 Ult from NewEgg, knowing that I do not really need MS support. Prior to the purchase, MS customer service told me over the phone, that if I purchased an OEM vers, it would come with a product key, that I could use to activate the OS. But I am having a problem.

I bypassed entering the prod key upon the install, as I did not have the DVD case handy (that's where the prod key is located - on the outside back of the DVD case), knowing full well, I would have the ability to enter it later on.

And this is what I am trying to do now, but it isn't working. Can't activate over the internet; try by phone automated system, no go. Get a rep from the activation dept. on the phone, give him the MS generated activation id (not the prod key), and he tells me this is an invalid id. So, already I am confused, because if the prod key was wrong, I would not have been able to continue. But I was; this tells me that the product key was entered correctly. So now, the rep transfers me to customer service, who takes the case number given to me by the activation dept. rep, and then proceeds to tell me that he can not help me - that he needs to transfer me to the activation dept. "Hold on" I say, and explain the situation. He then transfers me to technical assistance, and when I tell the rep what is going on, he now proceeds to tell me that he has to transfer me to the activation dept. "Hold on" I say, and explain the situation. Ok, he puts me on hold for a moment, and then tells me he needs to get over to customer service to get me a new product key. I am on hold for 10 minutes (now 30 minutes into the call total), and he comes back with the product key. I enter it successfully, and Windows now generates a new system id, which I give to the tech rep. He then asks me for the phone number to dial into to get the response id (???) and then puts me on hold for another 5 minutes to get me the response id. In his attempt to come back, he disconnects me. Way to go MS!

So, any ideas on what I should do here? Did the customer service rep I spoke to prior to my purchase incorrectly inform me when he told me that I could in fact use an OEM version with a custom build?

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Yeah - that's what I tried last night but it didn't work. Tried again this morning, and it did work doing the online act. Maybe there was a problem on MS's end - thanks for the reply!
