Unless my brother decides to give me a key, I will be planning on getting the upgrade version. So, if the key doesn't work just by entering it in system properties, The workaround is proven to work every time?

I have never heard of the workaround not working. It is the only way to install Upgrade version to a new or wiped HD which is the optimal way to clean install an OS, and absolutely required if you suspect infection or other corrupt code on the HD.
