Bought a HP Pavilion e9120f last Oct with Vista. It has been a problem child.
In Dec 2009 upgraded to Vista 7 using MS Vista upgrade disc provided by HP which solved many lockup problems. It has AMD Quad processor, 8 G ram and 1T HD.

For the last 3 weeks, everytime I right click any Decktop icon, it indicates a problem and checks with MS, then restarts IE8, which closes all web pages, restarts the desktop and many other programs that is running.

I am using Norton 360, Websweeper, Ad-Aware, ran Glary and Malwarebytes, then re-downloaded IE8. Nothing fixed the issue. Yesterday I reloaded Windows 7, the upgrade version. Again, nothing fixed the issue.

 Any ideas?

Thanks.. Paul..

Welcome Paul

First you should be using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes. They are know to work very well with Windows 7. Many problems are caused by some of the insidious anti virus and maintenance software that is being used with windows 7

You may want to try to click on tools, internet options>advanced>reset.

This will remove all the add-ons you have on IE. You will lose the add-ons but they can be reinstalled as you need them.

Let us know what happens.

Thanks to you both for your input.

According to other threads here, this seems to be a common problem whether a clean upgrade is performed or not (see: Right Click on desktop causing Explorer.exe crash!!! )

When I re-installed Windows 7 yesterday, it reset all of the internet settings. Didn't help.

Even though I don't have a web page open, when I right click any desktop Icon, it says "checking with microsoft for a solution", then says restarting IE8. Then the desktop restarts.

Thanks.. Paul..

Possibly, this problem may not be caused by the upgrade, but a clean install will always be the right course of action in the long term. The only difference between a clean install and an upgrade is the fact that with an upgrade you do not have to reinstall all of the programs. What you get in return for the additional time spent is a brand new OS and not one with the old problems, but looks new.

You can do a clean install with an upgrade DVD. All the members will be very happy to answer any questions. If interested, you have already been provided with the tutorial and you can watch the entire process on YouTube.
