Windows 7 Backup and Restore Free Space Problem

I recently backed up my computer using Windows backup and restore then decided I wanted to move the backup to a different drive. I couldn't see any option to move the files so I decided to delete the backup and start again.

However, in my haste, I deleted the files manually in Windows explorer instead of in backup and restore itself and therein lies the problem:

Although the files have been deleted the space taken up by the backup has not. i.e. there is 30GB of space still allocated to the backup that I can not seem to free up.

There are no backups showing in Windows backup and restore so I can't delete from there.

How can I free up this space since without formatting the drive since it contains lots of other information that I wish to keep?

Stimpy,
a little bit more info on your system would be helpful.

Run DISKMGMT.MSC and take a snapshot of the result.

Include the snapshot in your next post.

Do you want to keep the backup?

Never do a system backup to the very drive you want to restore.

Most people, since they do not have numerous hard drives, backup to an external drive.

first though, expand your system info and send that snapshot.

He wants to remove the entry for the backup that was deleted to recover the space it's saying the deleted backup is taking up.

Thanks, Karlsnooks. Unfortunately I'm not at my computer at present so I can't provide the snapshot. However, Bare Foot Kid is right: Windows has not freed up the space originally taken up by the backup even though the files were deleted.

I simply wish to free up this space. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
