windows 7 backup destination problem

Hi,

I want to setup the Windows 7 backup utility,

but Windows 7 only let's me pick the dvd-writer as destination for the backup.

I have an external harddisk in my network, which Windows 7 has detected, but I cannot pick it when I want to set up the backup.

Anyone help?

Which version of Windows 7 do yo have? I think you can only choose network locations in the Professional and Ultimate versions.

However, you may be able to map your network drive to your computer to trick Windows into thinking it's a local drive.

To correctly advise you, a snapshot of the maximized output of Disk Management, made when the external is connected, is needed.

To run the snipping tool,
WIN | type SNIP | ENTER

To run Disk Managment,
WIN | type DISKMGMT.MSC | ENTER

WIN is the key with the wavy flag.

HOW TO FILL OUT YOUR SYSTEM SPECS

In the line at the top of www.SevenForums.com you will see UserCP.
That is an abbreviation for User Control Panel.
Click on UserCP.
In the left-hand column, under Your Profile you will see Edit System Spec.
Click on Edit System Spec
You can copy and paste from the output of Speccy, Speccy - System Information - Free Download to fill out much of the info. Be sure to use the Other Info section of your System Specs for such info as your optical drive, your wireless adapter, your speakers, etc.

You may want to consider purchasing an external USB drive for backup purposes.

I just tried this on my computer - doesn't look like it works this way either. Windows knows the mapped drive is a network drive so we can't trick it

Looks like you're stuck with local only, so you can try plugging the network drive directly into your computer through USB or eSATA, etc - that will work. But, as said above, network locations are only available on the Profession and above versions.

I find it unbelievable that an operatoin system which I paid a lot of money for, has this issue, but nothin I can't do bout that.

Exactly.

But no worries (for me), I decided to use the Commodo Backup.
It's a very small, free, yet powerful tool that allows backup to where ever you want. That includes network locations.

Maybe a tip for other home users.
