I hve just installed Windows 7 on a new hard drive. No problems all went OK. Now I have always made a total hard drive copy of my O.S. so if anything went wrong I could just slide the back up drive into my machine via the withdrawable front drive bay. I have done this with Windows 7 and it seems that the system is installed to a specific drive only and copys made like I have done will not work. It comes up with unrecognisable item !!! I use Norton Ghost as always.
Any suggestions please?

I havent used Ghost for years.... I use Acronis True Image Home 2010 and have never had a problem backing up or restoring an image file.... That being said, Im not sure why you're having such a problem... Are you having a problem with Windows that you need to restore, or are you just testing?

Backup

Hello and thanks for your reply.

Everything is working great but I have always made a full backup about once a month so if anything does go wrong I can get swiftly back on and it has saved my bacon many times over the years. With this being the first time I have done this on Windows 7 I thought I would slip in the backup disc and make sure that it worked OK. It does seem that windows 7 installs to a particular drive and when a backup is done onto another drive it wont see it.

We will need to know what Norton Ghost you are using, (ie v12, v14, v14.5)

Welcome to Seven Forums.

Not sure what you are trying to say here.

"it seems that the system is installed to a specific drive only"

Do you mean Ghost is installed to a specific drive?
Or the backup is saved to a specific drive?
Or?

Backup

Hello ,

No I mean that when using the Ghost backup { total h.d. copy} it only works when the two discs are of identical make/type.

I have downloaded the trial version of Acronis True Image Home and that works 100% so I suppose I better shell out another £30 plus and upate to the full version. These changes of O.S. cost a fortune !!!!

Acronis True Image is a great program. I've used TI2010 for all sorts of things including convert Acronis images to Windows .vhd images and even booting them. But the latest build (6029) has some serious issues for some: Build 6029 hangs Windows 7 | Forums
Hoping Acronis gets things straightened out soon.

did you clone just the windows partition? because windows 7 actually creates 2 partitions during install C: and system reserved, witch is your boot partition.

Also why not just dump your disk to image on the other drive? dumping to image takes the same amount of time as the clone and dumping back to disk takes about the same amount of time that you spend swapping the drives...

Im doing the same thing kinda but makiing backup of my fresh clean upgrade install to win7 so that i dont have to reformat everytime then do the whole upgrade process again...

well in the last week i have tried almost all the well known good drive imaging or backup software and well... So far even checked with pcmags top list of them and well so far i have come up with either Genie backup manager or trueimage or even better. Shadowprotect desktop.
I also just download Ghost and well.. you did get version 15 right ?? as 14 doesnt work with win7

Im actually waiting on a backup to be done right now to test it out but...

Im not sure if im going to go with Ghost or not or one of the above.

but on yours it should be working if you used the correct version.. also 15 supports 14-12-11 etc versions files.

Ghost backup

Many thanks to all who have taken time to reply to me.

I have found over the years that the quickest for me at least is to make a total image on another hard drive so if anything does go pearshaped then I just swiftly unplug one and plug in the other and away we go. As I say Ghost has just worked fine over the years with XP VISTA AND ME.
I will check out those free programs that were left for me { thanks } and see what is next. The Acronis free trial has worked so I do have a backup of the Windows 7 now.

Again thanks to all

I have used Ghost for quite some time and never had any problems restoring an image to a different volume or partition so long as the volume or partition is large enough.
Perhaps it works differently with a cloned drive.

At least I have learned one thing from this thread and will now take a close look at Seagate Disk Wizard.
