I am using Windows 7 Ultimate Version 6.1 Build 7600, I was Using camtasia studio to edit a video when I got the BSOD, my first bsod since I got my computer in '07. Anyways after the computer rebooted and I logged on, the background wallpaper was solid black.
I tried to change the theme in the Personalize menu, but all the themes come up as solid black! At first I thought my display drivers got corrupted, but after uninstalling and re-installing them 4 times I found out this was not the problem.:(

Any other fixes you guys know of? Picture Attached

No guarantees.....

Right click at open space of desktop > Personalize > at the bottom, Desktop background > at Picture location, what does it say in the box ? Solid Color ?
If so, click the pointer and select another option > click Save Change

Are you able to change to other color beside the solid black?

Do you get a error message "this image cant be set as wallpaper. An internal error occured"
when you tried to set an image as desktop background.

There are a few possible reasons for the cause of your situation.

Try the following : 2 common solution

First..

Go to control panel/Ease of Access Center/Make the computer easier to see.....there is a checkbox option
of Remove background images ( where available ) uncheck it if it is check. Apply and ok.

if not

Second...

Click on your start orb, copy and paste the following line into your search programs and files box

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\

From here you should be able to see the TranscodedWallpaper, right click delete it. See it work now.
If still cant work manually go into the folder and delete the slideshow.ini file if any ( reboot required)

Hope it will solve your problem

Nothing working...

I am having the same problem as everyone as well. Mine stemmed from the Windows 7 restore virus. I was able to remove the virus and unhide my documents. I was able to restore all the Windows programs (accessories, games, etc.) but had no luck with the background.

Under the "Personalization" section, "My Themes" all show as black except one. All themes that came with the computer show up as well.

When I click the "my themes" that shows the picture, the picture shows up on the bottom of the screen but the desktop is still black. When I choose one of the windows themes, it selects it but shows the image at the bottom image as black as well as the desktop. (see pictures for both).

I have tried everything that has been suggested so far. I can't restore to an earlier time because the restore points from before the virus have disappeared so therefore any point will have a black background. The ease of access section is checked correctly, I have deleted the suggested files, and I have done a clean restart (and any other ones suggested on this thread).

Anybody have any advice? I would greatly appreciate it. This black background is driving me crazy! Thank you so much in advance!

Also, StopZilla, Malewarebytes, and Webroot all removed the the virus. They have been run since and none detect any other viruses or issues. Webroot is the only one running now so it is not the antivirus program that is doing this (webroot is the one i have had for years and it hasn't changed).

Can't change it to any other solid color either.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit. It is activated and I have had it for 18 months now. This is the first time I have had a problem with it. Nothing pops up saying there is a problem with the background or Windows when I try to change the background.

I have tried everything from the other threads on the site on this subject as well :(

Go to your computer manufacturer site, find out if you need to update your graphic card driver.

I've looked and it doesn't need one. I have a toshiba satellite L505D. Bought it in Sept 2009 and I was given the Windows 7 upgrade when it came out a short while later. Had it installed professionally because it didn't work when I did it.

It turned black when I got the virus and I haven't been able to change it back since even though the virus is gone.

Bummer. After I contracted the CleanThis virus, my own stupidity, I wound up reinstalling Windows as the system acted strange even after the virus was allegedly removed. If it hasn't been mentioned already, its a good idea to keep any data you don't want to lose backed up on DVDs or an external drive, flash drive, of some sort. Worst-case scenario, you can reinstall Windows and restore your data. I have at times found this faster than beating my head over some interactable issue. System restore has saved the bacon as well in the past.
