Sorry about the off topic post, couldn't find a 'suitable' forum....

Hey all.
I got the Windows 7 RTM quite a while ago and had no problems with it.
A couple days ago, though, I recieve a black screen with movable cursor after login. I am dual-booting with Windows XP, and XP is working fine.

Task manager will open, but is 'hidden' under the black screen. Same with everything else but the cursor.

I suspect this has something to do with VMware server, as this was the last program I installed (about a week ago) and it was also affecting my network adapters.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nope.

No, VMware was the most recent thing I'd tried to install.

EDIT: I just raped grammar.

First - please update your system specs. That helps a bunch when we try to troubleshoot.

Second - any luck booting into safe mode?

Ok,i had that problem when i tried to install an icon pack.

Open command promt in elevated mode, start>accessories> Right click command promt> run as admin

Then type sfc /scannow

I say to do this becasue it was a .dll file that was my problem last time.

Thanks, Minotar; it is running the scan now, but I don't know if I did it right because honestly I have no idea what elevated mode is and am just doing it in safe mode. Any help there?

Yes, obviously I can get into safe mode (as informed with the last sentence, lol.).
I'm not exactly sure what the specs ALL are, but if you tell me what you need I can get it for you. This is the basic stuff...

Yeah, I can get it into safe mode just fine.

BTW, I'm not too much of a computer junkie so if I missed out on something that you need w/ specs, let me know:

1 GB RAM
Processor: AMD Athalon XP 2000+ 1.6 ghz
Video card: NVIDIA GeForce 6800

Ok - you are in safe mode, but do you have the same video problems? Can you uninstall VMware?

I'm not having the same problems in safe mode, but I can't even DO anything in regular mode... And I can't uninstall; apparantly you can't do that in safe mode.

I tried putting that line into command prompt with no success.

And how do I get to SafeMSI.exe? Is it a downloadable program or one located on the computer?

It's an application, found through the link in the article I posted. However, it doesn't seem to be available at that link, but it is available here.

Here's the correct reg add code:

REG ADD "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\MSIServer" /VE /T REG_SZ /D "Service" net start msiserver

I booted into safe mode, and before I tried using the application or the reg code, I tried uninstalling WinRAR (that was the least important thing on my computer). I didn't have any problems uninstalling in safe mode. Can you uninstall any applications in safe mode?

Usually the last thing you did (install) and you start having problem...
DUH - uninstall and see if the problem goes away.

You fail to recognize that I had troubles uninstalling VMware. Kegobeer, I'm not at home right now but will be in a few hours and try then. If I can uninstall other apps, what would you recommend doing? If I can't, what would you recommend doing?

If you installed VMware with only 1gb of ram, thats where I would begin.. if you can boot into safe mode, try a system restore to a point before you installed VMware... also, did you check your specs to make sure that you could successfully run windows7??

How can I download that in Safe Mode? My computer is having troubles connecting to the internet and I was *hoping* to fix that after I got it working regularly again. Should I just download it on another comp and put it on a stick like someone else here (sorry, I can't remember who right now) suggested?

I've been running Windows 7 for a couple months at least now.

And now you cant run it... try system restore...

First of all, sorry for the late post. Have been busy lately. Second of all, I hadn't set up an image (or whatever you call it, lol) to restore to other than four days ago. Ouch. I tried THAT one anyway and it didn't work.

Also tried reinstalling Windows, and the installer doesn't recognize any of my partitions. At this point, I just want my computer running Windows 7 again, and if that isn't possible I'll probably have to deal with it.

So yeah, thanks for all the help and additional assistance would be appreciated.
