hello. as the title states, i have a windows 7 pc that won't boot past a blinking cursor on a darkened screen. it went through a chkdsk /r and lots of different things that took 50+ minutes; renamed some, deleted some, then rebooted. nothing. i went into the registry and opened a hive and made sure the bootup went to explerer.exe -- nothing.

then i decided to take some files off the drive from another pc. when i plugged it in, explorer showed a 'system reserved drive' -- in my case, m: -- and a 'local drive' n:. when i click on m:, it shows it to be empty, and when i click on n:, i get the window, 'n:\ is not accessible, access is denied' but does show there to be data on it.

so, then i right clicked on both drives and changed the security to allow everything for SYSTEM & Administrator (see, read, modify, etc.). i know i have admin rights to do this and everything is running smoothly, as all the files appear to be getting their attributes changed. now, i right click on both drives and see i have full rights...but i STILL can't see or access the files on n:! i can see the files as their attribs are being changed one by one, so i know they're there, but i can't manipulate them in explorer.

help and thanks!

Can you boot to safe mode? What video processor do you have?

Hello Ziff,

no, it always freezes during safe boot on the broken pc, that's why i decided to just save the needed files using explorer on a different pc. the video card in the second pc is a geforce in a alien pc.

to clarify, i can see all the rights have been modified by right clicking on n: and going into properties, but i still can't see the files. i can also see the security changing as there is a window that shows each file getting changed. it's so frustrating to see those file names permissions getting changed but still can't see them when i need to really see them.

is there some utility i can get to make this easier? all i want at this stage is to grab the important files off the n: drive.

thanks!!!

Any one of several Puppy Linux ISOs, burned to a DVD, or installed upon a USB stick, should be able to read your n-drive [it may be a different drive letter, naturally] and copy off the folders and files you want onto to another external media.

Likewise, one can get "Hiren's Boot CD", and boot it to 'Mini XP' mode, for a familiar easy to use Windows interface.
