I have windows seven 64 bits. I'm facing a big problem here: every program I download that needs a connection with internet doesn't work, except IE 8 and windows live messenger! All the browsers I've tested (that includes google chrome, mozila firefox, Opera), and all the online games I'm trying to use (ragnarök, GunBound, Tibia ETC.) don't work! Not even extra gadgets that I've downloaded from windows live site work if they need a connection!! But IE 8 and MSN do! I've already tried to disable firewall and anti-virus and they still don't work! So I think win7 is blocking them. What do I do?! someone help me, please!

Has this worked for you before, with other OS versions?

If not, you may want to check your router (if you use one) to see if it has a firewall implemented.

I don't believe Windows 7 has any way to block ports other than the firewall.

EDIT: Also check the IE settings to see if it is using a proxy... It sounds like you are being blocked by some security mechanism.

thanks... but still one question, how do I check if IE is using proxy?
P.S. Its not my router, because I recently changed it, and the problem was already there...

EDITED: oh, and no, it never happened with me in other OS. I have a XP and Google Chrome for eg. is working perfectly in it...

Something I didn't mention before... Unless this is a work system the Proxy is unlikely to be an issue, as it is rarely (if ever) used in a home... I guess maybe some ISPs may insist on using a proxy, but I don't know of any.

Here is Microsoft's explanation of setting proxy:

Change proxy settings in Internet Explorer

Hi. After the following updates (all happened at the same time) of my windows 7 64 bits, the connection of all the programs that need connection, excluuding Internet Explorer and WL messenger were blocked, and i can't unblock. those are the updates:

Atualização de segurança do Windows 7 para sistemas com base em x64 (KB978251)

Atualização para o Cliente do Rights Management Services para sistemas Windows 7 com base em x64 (KB979099)

Atualização de segurança do Windows 7 para sistemas com base em x64 (KB975560)

Atualização de segurança cumulativa para Kill Bits do ActiveX para Windows 7 para sistemas com base em x64 (KB978262)

Atualização de segurança do Windows 7 para sistemas com base em x64 (KB971468)

all of them were automaticaly installed when I turned the PC off at the day 10 of february

oh, and for some reason these same updates didn't let me make a "system restore"

P.S. my system is in portuguese so the updates description are in portuguese too
P.S.2: it wasn't proxy

I found someone with the same problem I have! here's the post, the answers he had hadn't helped me either. Someone help me please!

extracted from: Windows 7 Internet Connection problems with Programs

"Windows 7 Internet Connection problems with Programs/Not allowing internet access
I just bought a new emachines computer with Windows 7 Home Premuim 64 bit pre-installed. Whenever I try to run a program such as, Xfire, Steam, Teamspeak, AIM, Skype, or Digital River Securom, or ANY program that requires internet access they say that they cannot connect to the internet or that i first must connect to the internet before running, and won't work. I can get onto internet explorer fine, seeing as i am on it now, and my internet icon says "Internet Acess".

I have tried completely turning off my firewall and adding these programs to the exception list and still no luck. My computer is connect my DSL 2wire model 1701HG via ethernet cable. I have an older model emachines that runs Home Premium Vista 32 bit that is connected to the same router via ethernet and i have never had these problems. So i am assuming that it is a problem i am having with windows 7. "
