When my Viao ran Vista, Blu Ray worked a treat. Now i have upgraded to windows 7, it no longer works. It will play dvd's, even through hdmi, but not blu rays. Why is this? Do i need some 3rd party software? Thanks

I use PowerDVD 9 after trial and error trying other players. See if there is a firmware update for your drive too, I'd have a look for you, but you'll need to fill in your system specs first.

Even on your old laptop you would have had to have some 3rd party software in order to play blu ray. My recommendation is either PowerDVD 9 Ultra (make sure its the Ultra edition as that is the only version that plays blu ray) and total media.

Bluray readers/burners for PCs aren't all the same.

Some will read and play 99.9% of every BR out there.
Others, you'll be lucky if they can read and play 1/2 of them.

Ive been fairly lucky, as my LG has played nearly everything without issue.
But I had 2, Alien VS Predator2 (it spins up and then says no disc) and there was another I ran into ... cant recall which one it was now :/

To know if it's the reader itself or a software problem, Open Windows explorer, and look at your BD drive.
If it shows a disc loaded with the name, the drive is working and its a software issue you need to work out.

If its showing no disc, the reader simply can not read the disc.

You may just be unlucky in the sense you just happen to be trying to play the handful that particular drive doesnt want to play.
They all are different.

All you need to do is download Shark 007 codec pack, and you will play everything, including Bluray. That's the only 3rd party thing you need.

I have an LG Blu Ray/HD-DVD/DVD-RW Combo Drive that has played every Blu Ray I put into it. I only have a small collection, maybe 20 movies and rented maybe a dozen. I use Power DVD 7 Ultra that came with the drive.

Then the problem is probably hardware then :( bummer
Try ripping the disc, and mount it via Virtualclonedrive.

Hi,
I remember a few days ago, while surfing the web, I ran into an article about Blu ray problems in Win7.
One of the posters said the built in drivers that Microsoft provides are old and gave the following link for newer ones.:
PX Engine - Description and Download

Supposely these will fix "most" problems, I dunno, might be worth a shot.
Are the default drivers from Microsoft made by Roxio?
Lol I'm just surprised I remembered the link!

Also I have heard problems Playing thru Media Center concerning Blu ray/DVD. Seems disabling interface navigation sound in Media Center fixes some playback problems...lol!
Very strange, but true, I saw that bug fix on the official Microsoft Win7 forums.

my bad, i thought it saw it but not able to play it. If it doesn't even see the drive then it's certainly not a codec issue though srry bout that :/
