Windows 7 Boot Problem - Help Please

Hi All.

My install of Windows 7 was working fine and all of a sudden it won’t boot anymore. Yesterday I put in a required Java Program update install and I think Windows just added a couple of critical updates as well.

I have tried booting in every way possible, rolling back, safe mode, etc, and nothing works.

I keep getting the screen telling me there is a problem and must do a system repair. Then the repairs and all it wants to do is shut down.

I managed to pull up some error reports and it seems two files are corrupt which are TCPIP.SYS and one called FWPKCLNT.SYS.

TCPIP.SYS is located in C:/Windows/System32/Drivers

FWPKCLNT.SYS seems to be in drive F:/ which is not an actual drive. It must be a temporary boot drive created by Windows 7.

I have an older XP on another partition on the same hard drive so I booted in XP to see if I could possibly delete the reported corrupt TCPIP.SYS file and replace it from another Windows 7 install from my laptop just to see if that might work. But it won’t let me delete the TCPIP.SYS file. It says it is in use, but I can't understand that since I am trying to delete it from the Windows 7 partition while I am booted up from the XP boot partition.

I don't know what else to try, but I am hoping there is some sort of fix so I don't spend 6 hours nuking the Windows 7 OS and doing a full reinstall.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Will the system boot up?

Do you have a System Repair disk?

Thanks karlsnooks. It only boots to the Start Up Repair screen in Windows 7 and then fails to repair and wants to report to Microsoft and then wants to shut down only. No matter how I boot up it comes to the same screen.

I don't think I have a system repair disk other than one I made once using Norton I think which is a CD. Are you referring to a Windows System Repair disk?

I can create one it seems following these instructions though:

But I am actually able to pull up that screen through the Start Up Repair boot program so doesn't seem like I need to create one. The issue though is that I can't seems to do either a System Repair or a System Restore from that list of options. Both functions fail. It says there are no restore points as well.

Thanks. I created one and ran it many times. It just shut down the computer each time it tried to fix the problem and failed.

I got very close to doing a full reinstall and had put in the Windows 7 installation DVD. Before wiping out the whole system I decided to run the Windows 7 System Repair program one last time, but this time from the Windows 7 installation DVD itself.

Amazingly it brought back my Windows 7 system install, but now the Windows Firewall is screwed. I can't seem to get it to turn or to get it to troubleshoot and fix itself. I can live without it I guess, but is there any way I can simply somehow reinstall Windows Firewall alone?

Run sfc /scannow from elevated CMD.

Consider a Repair Install from Win7 desktop.

If you will post back a screenshot of your full Disk Mgmt drive map and listings with nothing cut off, we can see if anything is obvious with your HD config. Use Snipping Tool in Start Menu.

Thanks. I can't follow that last part. But Windows Firewall doesn't seem critical to have as far as I understand. My Router has a Firewall and it seems the Windows Firewall from what I read really only protects from other computers on a shared network. My network and router is just me. Only one computer. So maybe not so critical anyway?

You need the Windows Firewall which is fortified by all of the MS Security Updates, along with a lightweight uninstrusive free AV like MS Security Essentials.

Type Disk Management in Start Search box, open it and make full screen. Then use Snipping Tool in Start Menu to create a Rectangular Snip of the drive map and listings. Post back using paper clip in reply box.

It is likely you'll need to clean reinstall. If you want to keep XP, use DVD to delete and format the Win7 partition and it should configure the Dual Boot with XP again if XP is not corrupted.
