Hi everyone,

I am in need of someone helping me to find a solution cause I have found nothing at all to fix it.
The issue is that every time I plug in my Seagate Freeagent Go external hard drive I get BSOD a few moments after. This only started happening yesterday after it froze, it was plugged into a media player and randomly froze. I often use it with media players, although yesterday it was plugged into a new one.

Over about 10 BSOD's it had shown me 3-4 different errors. One being ntfs.sys, with the description being something along the lines of "Something has tried to write itself to a read-only file". Sorry it's not exactly accurate, but it's along those lines.

if anyone can share some info on it or maybe links to fix it I would be extremely grateful.

Here are my specs:
http://www.sevenforums.com/#Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Model: HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC

Memory: 8192MB RAM
VGA: AMD Radeon(TM) HD 6620G

Thanks for any help :)

Hi -

24 BSODs in the last ~24 hours w/ a few different bugchecks; many listing ntfs.sys = NTFS File System.

Try the external HDD in another system - see if it works.

If there is backup software for the ext HDD installed - remove it.

Plug the HDD in and run HDD diags - SeaTools for DOS LONG test (boot from CD) - http://www.techsupportforum.com/2828431-post7.html

Is the ext HDD formatted FAT32 or NTFS?

Regards. . .

Hey Jcgriff2, thanks for the quick reply.

Yeah last night I continued to plug in my HDD even with the BSOD as I was able to get about one minute to do stuff with the hard drive in, and I was following some guides that weren't very helpful trying to get some scans and updates.

I plugged my HDD into my old Win7 32bit laptop and still got BSOD. I couldn't manage to find any backup software for the HDD.

Also I also followed the tech support guide you gave me but I couldn't manage to get my laptop to boot from the CD Rom even going through setup and changing the order to boot CD Rom first. So I couldn't run any tests on the HDD.

Unfortunately, I don't know whether the HDD is formatted with FAT32 or NTFS, though the HDD wouldn't be more then a couple years old. If that's any help.

If the ext HDD caused 2 different systems to BSOD, the ext HDD has likely failed.

Burn another SeaTools CD - preferably on a different system. Try diagnostics again.

Ok, thanks. Just to be sure, I'm doing it right. I DL Seatools (for DOS), burn it to a DVD/CD using ImgBurn (Which Option I select with ImgBurn)? I've been using the option "Write files/folder to disc". Once that finishes restart and boot on CD?

ImgBurn - Select "Write image file to disk" -

The "image file" = SeaTools for DOS ISO file.
