Acer aspire 5738z laptop, bought with vista home premium now upgraded with acer windows 7 upgrade disk.
Windows works no problems at the moment but now can not access safe mode.
Boot menu can be accessed by pressing F8 when booting, choose safe mode, drivers list flashes by,mouse cursor appears for a few seconds then it reboots before safe mode opens.
Spoke to Acer who could only keep repeating "use the restore disks" but this would then be Vista not 7 that is installed which defeats the purpose of upgrading.
Thanks for any advice

phil :D

The first thing that people usually regret when switching from Vista to Win7 is using "upgrade" instead of a clean install. And most of them experience some kind of problems, which usually ends up in reinstalling Win7 with a clean installation, so if nobody else knows why this happens, you always have this option.

I agree do the clean install now. The longer you wait the more programs, etc. you have to reinstall.

Probably a virus, like I just had. It seems our biggest threat now is anti-virus companies writing viruses so they can sell their software.

If you can get to the dos prompt, check for winupdate86.exe in the Windows\System32 folder. If you find it, check the net for it and you will see the winlogon86 and other files. You probably can't open task manager or perhaps msconfig.exe. If you can get into msconfig.exe. check for startup utilities.

I was having my problems in Win XP. It would be really disappointing if Win 7 was to fall victim to the same type of problems.

Thanks for replies.
Saltgrass - yes I can access task manager and msconfig, tried altering msconfig to boot into safe mode and got stuck in a loop because safe mode would not load. Had to restore to an image I had done before trying msconfig.
Might have to bite the bullet and do a clean install etc.
Thanks

Saltgrass,

Probably a virus, like I just had. It seems our biggest threat now is anti-virus companies writing viruses so they can sell their software.
This thought occurred to me also, especially several years back, when Norton released a fix for a virus that had only been announced the day before. The virus was announced late in the day, and Norton released early the next day. I know nothing about such programming, but I would tend to think that it would take a little more time than that.

I have never put much faith in the idea of there being so many people with nothing better to do with their time than to create millions of viruses, and gain nothing more than some kind of ego boost.

The Acer Upgrade kit contains a clean copy DVD of Win7 which can be booted for the cleanest possible install, using Custom Advanced drive tools to format the HD before install.

There is also a CD with apps and drivers for your model so you can retrieve apps you like, and find any drivers not included in the installer or given soon afterward by Windows Updates.

This is unfortunately the only fix, but it is a far better install than the in-place Upgrade which carries over the corruption from Vista (the worst OS ever) into the best OS ever.

Even a Repair Install at this point would carry forward the corruption which has infected system files.
