I have an old HP laptop, it recently crashed due to hard drive failure. So naturally, while getting a new hard drive I was going to install Win7 rather than Vista that came with it. It's originally a 32 bit system, but I was thinking of going with the 64 bit. I am unsure as to whether or not it will be able to load. I have a Centrino processor which I am also unsure if 64 bit will be compatible with it.

Hope to hear so thoughts on this issue, thanks.

If you had your system specs filled out, we'd be able to give you a better answer. What is the model number of your processor? That should be in your documentation that came with your laptop.

I couldn't find the documentation of the laptop off hand, but I open up the panel to access the processor and the model number is: 4965agn mm1

Before crash I had:
Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium edition SP1. Which I believe was a 1.83gHz Core2Duo as well as 3GB of RAM. I just saw this info elsewhere, but still unsure about processor since the sticker on laptop says else wise. (centrino)

Thanks for the link, but I don't have a running computer at the moment. The current computer (laptop) I have none is hard drive less. So I purchase a new hard drive, and just trying to see if my laptop could be able to support Win 7 64 bit.

Sorry, still kind of new to all this. I have an HP Pavilion dv6700, but it's also saying on the service tag that it's a dv6833us, which is probably the one to use.

If that`s not a dual core cpu then no you can`t. Google the cpu.

Thanks, I see that it doesn't have the Centrino processor listed. I looked here, http://www.intel.com/products/centrino/duo/316944.pdf and a little unsure if what I have now in my laptop would be considered dual core, since it is about 3 years old.

All things being equal, if you were installing to a modern (read that as current) laptop, I would say go 64 bit for certain. That being said, if you plan on using your older laptop for some time and it has being running fine on 32 bit, I see no compelling reason to change.

So I assume it's ok to follow through with putting Win7 x64 on my laptop made with Vista x32.

Yes, it should install and run without issue. Just make sure you get your drivers beforehand and keep them on a flash drive.

Could you explain that a little more to me? As well as possibly helping me out on getting the drivers. Thanks

If you are putting Windows 7 on the computer, than make sure you download the Windows 7 drivers for your laptop and have them handy offline, such as on a flash drive, so you can easily reinstall them once Windows 7 is installed. You definitely want your network drivers, so at least you could get the laptop online and let Windows Update find the rest.

Since you have an OEM system, you should be able to get them all from HP's website by putting in your model number. If HP's site doesn't have Windows 7 x64 drivers for you, then you'll probably have to get them from each manufacturer's site, like Intel, etc. That's an easy process, but this is why it is important to know the specs of your laptop.

I entered the product number instead of name, and there was nothing listed for Win7 drivers. Do you think that I could use the drivers that are listed for Vista 64 bit? Perhaps if I were to use those, it would just update itself for Win 7.

I'm not sure (don't remember) if this will tell you if you're 64-bit ready but it will tell you what issues Windows 7 will have doing an upgrade - Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor - Download - Microsoft Windows

If you do use the tool do let us know if it says anything about 64-bit.

Thanks.
