Yes, it is possible, but it's also possible that the missing driver is causing this.
Another possibility is that the hard drive is dead/dying.
Since your system uses an Intel driver - and most of the Intel drivers are included in the Windows disks - then it's most likely that the computer would recognize this (so you should be able to see the hard drive using the recovery/repair DVD and that you should be able to see the hard drive using the built in diagnostics).
So, what remains is (in general)
- an issue with the hard drive
- an issue with the connection between the hard drive and the cable
- a bad cable
- an issue between the cable and it's connection to the motherboard
- an issue with the hard drive controller on the motherboard
- another issue with the motherboard
- an issue with other devices plugged into the motherboard
In a laptop the only thing that you can check is the hard drive and it's connection to the cable. To do this, remove the AC Adapter and battery, then open the hard drive cover and remove the hard drive. Plug it back in - ensuring that it's seated firmly, and try it again.
If that doesn't fix things, then try these free hardware diagnostics. At times these diagnostics will detect the hard drive when the built in tests don't:
I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests. They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:

Please start by running these

ALL of the hard drives.
Also, please run one of these free, independent online malware scans to ensure that your current protection hasn't been compromised:

If the hard drive still isn't recognized, then it's time to try another one. They're not all that expensive (I just purchased a 250 gB SATA drive for a laptop for $43 (US).
