Hi all, my computer freezes as it logs into windows.

One day, the computer is working fine, next morning, go to turn it on and it does this.

Everything looks all normal, but then the computer will simply freeze, no BSOD, no strange noises, it just stops (like its been frozen in time). The HD light stops and it won't respond to the keyboard at all.

I can boot into safe mode just fine, and from there I have tried using Autoruns and disabling a few things (basically anything thats not from MS) and have done the same through MSCONFIG. In MSCONFIG, if I select "Diagnostic Startup", then it will load into Windows normally, without many functions.

I have tried updating the graphics card driver (from INTELS website) to no avail.

I have taken checked to make sure that the RAM modules are properly inserted (they are) and couldn't spot anything loose inside the computer.

Any help would be much appreciated, and if there is any further information you need............ just ask.

I am loathe to do a clean install without knowing what the cause of this problem is, just so that I know what to do if it happens again in the future without resorting to a clean install.

it sounds like it is something that is loading at start up like a application or background service while in the msconfig go to service tab and check the box at the bottom left corner hide all MS services and see what that leaves uncheck most of those there maybe one or two you might need but have a good look there

Will probably be a 3rd party app/driver if it loads ok into safemode/diagnostic startup, have you installed/changed anything recently?

Computersplus: Thanks for the suggestion, it hasn't made any difference.

Pauly, I'm not really a Janner, I hail from London but am studying in Plymouth.

I have recently changed the partitioning, removed the second partition that the computer came with as I no longer needed it, I did that yesterday, thinking that I had managed to fix it (I had disabled pretty much everything). I have updated the display driver today (no difference), run a virus scan (using Microsoft security essentials) and have gotten the latest updates for Windows from MS, prior to today, there have been no updates since Dec 27th last year.

Hi Daniel, Welcome to SF,

I suspect it might has to do something with either User Profile or it might be a Virus or Malware becuase it has a tentency to disable some of the important Microsoft service. Two things you might wanna try. One would be to go to any Online Virus scanner webiste through Safe Mode then run it. Then

Start > Run > SFC/ SCANNOW

Also try to Create a New User account from Safe Mode and try to login under that Account. Also make sure all the drivers are up to date.

Hope this helps,
Captain

Your a student its friday and its dark outside shouldnt you be in a pub, ride maybe or cuba(i live in plym)

Ok on a serious note if you can boot properly on diagnostic startup then go into msconfig selective startup and disable everything, then go into services tick hide all ms services then untick the rest then reboot
If it starts ok then re-enable bit by bit till you find the culprit

Hope this helps, if not then it will prob be a driver issue

Post back your results

UnHackMe

UnHackMe is a very good tool it's for finding and removing rootkits install it and have it check your system on reboot it will examine everything that try to load this has found rootkits for me that nothing else could even if it's not a rootkit it will show you what is loading one by one and will let you check info on that item just be careful with this you could remove the wrong thing none the less it's a great tool if you know what your doing

Pauly: It may be a dark friday but I am stuck at my parents house up in North Wales (hoping to travel back tomorrow), I was partial to Quay Club on Fridays, but I've not been in a while. That said, Cuba and Ride do sell B52's..............

Computerplus: I sometimes do run external HD's etc, I have tried disconnecting them, but this makes no difference.

UnHackMe seems to think that everything is fine, it didn't find anything.

Capt. Jack: Creating a new user didn't help. I was wondering if there is an online virus scanner that you would recommend?

Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated.

I've tried a new virus checker which came up with nothing.

I've just booted up with only the MS services running, which seemed to allow the computer to run for a little longer (about enough time to open Chrome and load Facebook).

One time, I started the computer and told it to use the last known good settings, and I got a BSOD, I shall try last known good settings again to see if I get the same BSOD and will upload it.

I think I may just go with a clean install, now it seems to want to boot into Windows quite happily, but its like its going into the diagnostic startup, when I have set it to do a normal startup with all services etc enabled. It is loading all my other software, but no internet connectivity, no sound etc.

I think at this point that would be the best option would be to do a Clean install make sure you install good virus protection like Microsoft Security Essentials and a Spyware Blaster for added security. Then start surfing the Internet

Good Luck,
Captain
