Windows 7 when not ingame.

Hi....

I have a small problem with windows 7 after i upgraded it from build 7200(i think). Now i have the latest RTM(x64) installed. Formatted my hard drive and installed it. It works for about a day and then it crashes and after that it crashes randomly. PC might run well for about an hour and then crash. Sometiems it crashes as soon as it boots up. But sometimes it dosent crash at all for a day or two.

However it never crashes when im playng something. If i dont want my pc to crash i just open a pc game alt tab out and it dosent crash. Never.

This might be a wrong section where to post but it might be releated to video card drivers. However i have tried using windows 7 default drivers and newest drivers from ati.com

Maybe someone here can help me how to resolve this problem. And i hope its not a repost. My PC specs should be in my profile.

hi Goodwin, welcome to the forum,

probably no-one has answered because your problem seems so odd.

are you saying your computer never crashes if you have a game running, but randomly crashes if not?

my ati card boots up in 2d mode, running at a low clock-rate and low voltage (to save power/fan speed) - when i start a game, the card switches itself to a much higher clock speed, then switches itself back down when i exit the game.

maybe your problem is linked with this.

are you able to monitor your graphics card's gpu and memory speeds? i don't have catalyst control centre installed, i'm not sure if you can check using that...

personally i use ati tray tools to take full control of my card's voltage, speeds, fan -but i don't want to bother you with this if you can use catalyst control centre instead.

Pardon if it is an obious question but just to get it out of the way...

So you have a clean install of the RTM, yes?
Did you install the latest chipset driver for your MOBO as well?

Thanks for replyng. It dosent give me a blue screen of death. It just locks up. Nothing moves... ctrl ald del dosent work.... nothing. Only way is to restart.

I didnt have this problem when i used Build 7200 (could of been older build and i upgraded to 7200 dont remember) but when i upgraded to newer version this thing started to happend. I have allmost tried every build and i allways have the same problem. I have upgraded all my drivers.... dosent work.

And yes... it never crashes when im running a game. It really dosent matter what game... right now i have the first half life running and it havent crashed for 3 days. Im pretty sure if il close it it will crash in about an hour or two.

This might cause the problem. Have to check it out. Dont have a clue how to fix it thou...

What does event viewer say? Just type event viewer in search and check the app tab for errors

Have you tried isolating the startup apps?

If not, you can use MSCONFIG to disable all startup apps. Re-boot and see if the problem continues to occur.

If it is DOES NOT, then you can begin enabling each startup app until the problem can be replicated.

If it does continue to occur then the focus switches to Windows OS/drivers/hardware or any combination thereof.

I may have missed the answer but are the MOBO settings stock or are they OCed?

There are lots of events ("Information") but dont see much errors. TV tuner has some errors but thats not the problem. Allready checked that. Il close the game and see when my pc crashes and check the logs then. But i have checked them before and well.. atleast I dont get any useful information from them.

Sorry for my english. Not my main language.

Well.... I see there are not any forthcoming possible solutions.

"Blackbox" problems are so much fun... brute force anyone?

My next step would be to crack the case, remove all unecessary cards - especially the TV Tuner or USB expansion cards, reseat all other cards and cables, remove any external HDDs or flash drive devices.

Re-boot again, let her run and see what happens.

Not very elegant I know but without any visible error conditon it sometimes becomes a matter of removing software/hardware to isolate the offending component (s).

Edit: Reseat the memory as well. A marathon run of your preferred memory testing program could not hurt either.

Well.... its not the tv tuner(USB). I suspected that too in the beginning. Dont have any special cards inside. Whats in my system spec is pretty much all i have... ofcourse + tv tuner and usb keyboard(G15). Tried switching memory.. have done some tests too.... all seems to work just fine.

Its kind a funny. If i format my drive and install windows on it and let it run for some time, it usually runs fine for a day.. then it crashes. Then it runs fine again for a day.... and crashes. And after that it starts to crash more often. It crashes when i watch movies.... when im not doing anything at all.... when im surfing the internet.... BUT NEVER when a game is running. I mean.. it havent crashed not a single time when a game is running. Weird. I have searched all over internet for this problem and havent found anything similar.

A seemingly random crash/lockup problem always is. You have my empathy.

Have you got another video card to test with? I know you don't want to have that suggested but it might eliminate it as the culprit, or prove that it is.

Another possible is the PSU is flaking out.

Just some thoughts...

I can switch video cards tomorrow.... sure i can try that..... And im pretty sure it actually dosent crash with a different video card. That does not help me much thou ^^
